Roslyn Long Island New York: 1866. F. Handwritten signature and date on slip of paper, pasted to a slightly larger piece of backer paper. The second 'l" in the author's signature light. When held to light, beneath the author's signature another is visible on the lower paper, which appears to be Robert Robinson. William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) American poet and journalist. "...An attentive listener, inquisitive, well informed, shrewd in professional matters…did not conform to any of the stereotypes of the "poet" of his day....In 1843 Bryant purchased property on Long Island, New York, at Roslyn, where he was not only free to write, but also able to pursue his botanical interests, planting and nurturing specimens of trees and shrubs from around the world. The house and grounds of Roslyn have been preserved..." (Albert F. McLean in the ANB) Paper is approx. 1 3/4" x 4 1/2" size, written finely in black ink.
