A large-format mounted black and white photograph of 29 young women and their (presumed) teacher or maestro, the only male in the image; an entirely stringed instrument orchestra, with 22 violins, 2 bass viols, 3 cellos and a large standing harp; the laides all very formally attired in long petticoated white dresses, decorated with elaborate flouncing and lacy sleeves, the women all very serious and posed to perform; with the Gessford, N.Y. studio name in the plate and the Gessford, Photographer 288 Fifth Ave., N.Y. small rubber stamp identifier on back of the cardstock mount; very large format, the photograph 10 3/4" x 13 1/2", the mount making it a full 16" x 20"; no date and circa 1910; some wear and soiling to the cardstock; the image with some spottiness, soil; still, a good clear photograph, in very good condition overall; Joseph G. Gessford (active 1875-1925) a successful portrait & society photographer in New York. Item #21363
