1906 Portrait Card of Brigadier General Andrew S. Burt, Inscribed, Signed and with a Short Note

Handwritten note in pen, below a printed portrait of U.S. Brigadier General Andrew S. Burt. Dated Chicago Sept. 1906 and signed "Yours in clouds and sunshine" Andrew S. Burt Brig. General U.S. Army." The personally encouraging and friendly note under the portrait is addressed, "To my friend and comrade Lieutenant Chisley R. Perry 2nd Illinois vols. in war of '98 with Spain, a fine officer, a good Soldier - and a loyal friend. May you have all the pleasures in life, health and happiness, you are of sure success if intelligence and "hustle" wins out!...(signed & dated)" Andrew S. Burt (1839 - 1915) was a 41-year career veteran of the U.S. Army and served in four conflicts: the American Civil War; American Indian Wars; Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. Enlisted as a private in Ohio at the beginning of the Civil War, wounded at the battle of Mill Spring, Kentucky; commended for gallantry after the Battle of Chickamauga; "...helped lead the charge against Missionary Ridge at Chattanooga...participated in the Atlanta campaign and was later brevetted major for gallant and meritorious service during the campaign and especially at the Battle of Jonesborough..." On the Western frontier, Burt fought against Red Cloud & the Oglala in Wyoming; fought skirmishes in Montana and participated in the Yellowstone Expedition and others along with participating at the Battle of the Rosebud. In 1892 he was given command of the 25th Infantry, an African-American regiment. (wiki and other sources) Accompanied by a few later photocopied biographical papers from a previous owner, concerning the General's war service record & later campaigns. Approx. 5" x 8 1/4" overall size; a little edge, tips wear; couple of surface-cracks at two corners, with tissue repair on the back; old album-mounting residue on the reverse of the card; in good condition.
