Standing portrait, candid photo, undated and circa 1931, when Tagore was in NY and Woolley had provided introductory commentary on his visit. Mary Emma Woolley (1863 - 1947) American educator, feminist, and peace activist; "...With her commitment to the intellectual life, her belief in the individual's responsibility to society at large, and her deep religious faith, Mary Woolley inspired generations of young women to believe in themselves and to succeed in the world. By acting on her convictions and working tirelessly for peace and social justice, Woolley also showed the world that an educated woman's ability knew no bounds." (Catherine A. Allgor in the ANB) Rabindranath Tagore (1861 - 1941) Indian poet and educationist; "...No thorough history of South Asia in the twentieth century can be written without taking Tagore's life and influence into account...His compassionate wholeness of outlook, humanist, rationalist, as respectful of modern science as of India's spiritual heritage, has imparted a civilized ideal that has not been overturned...."
