Autograph letter signed, dated Feb y 7th, sent from Budleigh Salterton South Devon. "Dear Miss Clayton Your letter forwarded from the Garrick Club only reached me this morning or it would have been replied to long ago. Ward & Lock are not my regular publishers and hold only the copyright of some of the cheap editions of my earlier books. I am pleased to hear my stories interest you the last by the way is partly laid in Manchester (Beatrice & Benedick) though its years since I set foot in it - not since my Soldiering days indeed - Very Sincerely yours Hawley Smart" and signed again by him "Most Sincerely yours Hawley Smart" on the opposite panel. Henry Hawley Smart (1833 - 1893) British army officer and novelist, "...served through the Crimean War, returned to England in 1856, and sailed next year for India, where he served during the mutiny. In 1858 he exchanged into the 17th (Leicestershire) regiment, and went to Canada. Smart left Quebec in 1864, sold out of the army, and, after losses on the turf, became a professional novelist....He subsequently produced two or more novels a year, amounting to some thirty-eight in total…They were novels of 'society', military life, racing, and hunting, based in part on his own experiences. Entertainment rather than literature, they none the less, especially the army and racing stories, have some force and character..."
