(xiv, used twice, actually xvi) + 448 pages, the last page erroneously numbered as 442. With 6 color plate illustrations of cloud formations & other meteorological occurrences occurring over various landscapes, engraved by F.C. Lewis after the author's sketches. The Preface notes that this third edition has "...added a considerable number of new observations, and has appended a Journal of Natural History, in order that the reader, by comparing the Calendar of Flora, &c. with the weather, may arrive to a more perfect notion of the particular climate of this part of Britain..." Useful index at back. Title page with the author's signature and date of 1823; free endpaper at front with his signature, along with the presentation inscription, "A Mons.r Andre Poey de la part de L'Auteur"; front paste-down with the circular bookplate E Libris Thomae Forsteri M.B. S.L.S. S.A.S. Anno 1830. Thomas Ignatius Maria Forster (1789 - 1860) British writer on science and phrenologist; credited with coining the term for that study. In a varied career, he collected plants; discovered a comet; ascended via balloon to study the effects of height & atmosphere - naming it aerostatics; "...published an edition of letters between Locke, Shaftesbury, and Algernon Sydney, inherited from Benjamin Furly, with a preface on metaphysics....(also) articles on refraction and other astronomical phenomena...published poems, songs, and literary studies… composed various pieces for violin and collected choice instruments. His edition of family letters, privately printed at Bruges, is valuable..." (Janet Browne in the DNB; which also notes Forster's residence in Brussels, Schaerbeek & Bruges in Belgium for many years. Front endpaper also with the small name-stamp of collector George R. Brush M.D., U.S. Navy; in service as a surgeon & medical inspector, from 1861-1894; second front endpaper with a pencil note in French regarding various editions of the book. Approx. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" size; marbled paper covered boards, polished calf leather corners and spine, black label gilt titled. Spine dry, worn, chipped at ends; block of text solidly sewn; in good condition.
