F iv + 336 pages; a half-year of issues of this magazine-newspaper; with a useful index of subjects & list of illustrations at front (index is for the entire year). With a double page color plate "Sketches in the Hunting Field, No. 1 - The Meet" by J. Charlton. At back is a large 5- panel folding black and white plate, "The Grand Duke Nicholas of Russia Announcing the Signing of the Peace to His Troops, St. Stefano, March 3, 1878" signed in the plate by G. Durand. The Russo-Turkish War of 1877 - 1888 is well covered throughout, with many large illustrations, some of which are folding or double-page. The magazine is filled with British and world news, travel, much on the royalty, sporting news of all kinds, horse racing, stories, opinion, obituaries, science, exploration, military notices, theatres, arts, home, music, Australia and the Colonies and more. Of note are several illustrations & accompanying text concerning Stanley's expedition and travels in Tanganyika, fight with the Bangala, Kalulu Falls, Death of Pocock; the Paris Exhibition is also given expanded treatment; along with the death of Victor Emmanuel II King of Italy. Also much on the activities of the British Empire in India, including conflicts with the native forces; the excavation, movement and travel preparations of the Cleopatra's Needle obelisk on its voyage to England; the death of the Pope and news from Asia, China, Japan. With many advertisements for items available in London of this time. Heavy, large format, approx. 7 pounds with the shipping; approx. 12 1/2" x 16" size. Bound in dark brown marbled paper covered boards, dark brown leather spine and corners; some edge, tips wear to binding, spine covering dried-out, rubbed; occasional closed edge-tear to contents, one issue's leaves detaching; one corner of a double-page chipped away; first few leaves with a bit of discoloration at edge & gutter, transferred from the leather boards; overall, an extremely interesting, huge compendium and view of life for this era; contents usually very clean and in very good condition.
