(16) + 590 + (16) page Table + 147 + (8) pages; (lacks pages 519 - 566 of the 'New Covenant…'); title page woodcut ornamental surround, woodcut initial letters other tailpiece and printers' ornaments; "The Saints Daily Exercise..." also the Ninth Edition, Corrected printed by Elizabeth Purslow for Nicholas Bourne 1634; Previous owner name on the title page of the New Covenant and The Saints of Ralph Ffell (d. 1680); our research indicates that he was a Master of the Trinity House Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1647 and noted as a 'merchant adventurer' of that town. An additional inscription in Latin and in similar contemporary hand on the back of the title page declares "Illustrissimi et honorissimus viris Theophili Comiti Lincolnissis," paraphrasing the printed dedication to Theophilus Clinton (1600 - 1667) 4th Earl of Lincoln at this time; there is another small ownership sign or mark 'l-x'(?) on a blank. John Preston (1587 - 1628) Church of England clergyman, " exemplary 'experimental predestinarian' and as a member of the spiritual brotherhood who pursued this approach to piety, Preston was indeed a puritan. In regard to outward conformity, or rather lack of it, he was a moderate or a fully conforming puritan. But this does not imply that he was complacent about the ecclesiastical status quo, for in that sense he was a conforming reformer..." (Jonathan D. Moore in the ODNB) The volume approx. 5 1/2" x 7 3/4" size; leather over thick paste-paper boards; binding very worn and coming undone, with old hand-sewn repairs and pieces of leather sewn-in; no front or back endpapers, title page of first section detached, darkened & edge-chipped, worn, as are first few leaves, others with tears, spotting, foxing; 'The Saints…' collated complete; in fair condition only, with interesting provenance.
