F Collection includes 33 individual pieces of business correspondence - receipts, letters, & combinations of these - mostly (23 pieces) from March to May of 1852, with one item each from 1855, 1858, 1861, (2) from 1862 and (1) from 1863; includes sales reports & receipts from Dodge, Tucker & Co; Collins, Brothers; J.G. Dudley & Co.; Austin Sumner & Co. Dry Goods, Cottons, Woolens; Wm. J. Reynolds & Co. Publishers, Booksellers and Stationers; Seth Adams , Jr. Flour & Corn; B.F. Brown & Co. Drugs, Paints, Oils and Dye-Stuffs; Frederic Fuller, Jr., Bell and Brass Founder; Cornett & Nightingale, Iron & Steel; of interest are the letters: requests for equipment - castings, drive shafts, pulleys, plates, mill machinery, the pricing and negotiations in progress for various deals, requests for drawings and plans for client's specific needs, for breaks or additional commissions for sales made, decisions and disputes on terms and agreements; a client requesting the name of a reliable lawyer in their area; another by an engineer/inventor requiring continued support for a new frame for the mill workings, trading for coal needed for the plant, several letters from Dudley Co., regarding their sales of Whitin materials; an inventor from Hartford requesting Whitin Co. to resolve an issue with his patent; requests for types of machinery made by Whitin; (with) a sub-group of 5 pieces regarding P. Whitin & Son's business ordering material from the firm of Brown & Taggard, Publishers and Book and Stationery Jobbers, all dated month of December 1861 on the B & T letterhead, listing purchases made by Whitin - including 24 Websters' spellers, 12 Sargents readers, a Mitchell's atlas, a dozen slates, dozen Intro to Geog., school supplies of other kinds, dozens of items listed, usually in quantities and evidently for a teacher & company school; a very interesting grouping of business correspondence showing the range of activity of this important Massachusetts mill, which has become recognized as being of national significance in the history of American industrialization; some light wear, old fold lines, some old discolorations, staining on a few; in very good condition overall.
