F xvi + 339 pages; useful index at back; black and white illustrated frontispiece and other illustrations within; William Henry Hudson (1841 - 1922) a naturalized British citizen, Argentine-born author and naturalist, "...His carefully crafted and precise prose has a poetic quality which appeals to the senses as much as its meaning does to the intellect..." (Dennis Shrubsall in the DNB); approx. 5 3/4" x 8 1/2" size; with the bookplate of Dr. Bertel Bruun (1937 - 2011) Danish-American naturalist, international conservationist and neurologist, author of several birding guides; bound in green & yellow marbled paper covered boards, with crushed green morocco corners and spine; simple gilt rules on the covers, spine with gilt titles, floral decoration in gilt at top, gilt date in lower compartment; the large middle compartment filled with ornate and beautiful gilt tooling of birds fluttering on flowering stalks, with leafy tendrils, gilt point-dots, and the blooms lightly colored red or yellow; all edges gilt, marbled endpapers to match; spine leather faded to a pleasing caramel; with the binder's imprint in gilt on the front bottom edge turn-in, 'Bound by Cuneo'; slight wear, bottom edge of marbling surface of the front inner endpaper little rubbed-away; overall, in very good condition and a very pleasing binding with a natural-history motif from this American bindery of note.
