F xi + (7) + 592 pages, with the half-title; followed by the plate section; total of 26 colored plates & a folding map at back, all collated complete; German text; approx. 9" x 12" size; old German bookseller's label of on front endpaper of Alfred Troschutz Bucchandlung und Verlag fur Naturfreunde Hannover; bound in colorful orange-red-black marbled-paper covered boards, leather spine with gilt decorations & titles; all edges lightly marbled in blue; one compartment chipped away at top of spine; leather chipped, dry, worn; sewing still very solid, boards with some wear and in good condition; the plates well-printed; a good, complete reading and reference copy or for rebinding; Gustav Radde (1831 - 1903) self-educated and well-traveled German naturalist and explorer, who spent most of his career in the Russias; at the point of publication of this book, he had founded and become the director of the Museum of the Caucasus in Tbilisi (Tiflis) which became his home and base of operations; he enjoyed the favor of the Russian royalty and aristocracy and was a great collector in entomology as well as ornithology and other natural history subjects; the plates are particularly good examples of the beautiful German lithographic work of the later 19th century.
