La Guerra Ispano - Americana Del 1898 (bound with) Sopra Il Monumento Eretto in Urbana (Padova) Ai Caduti Nella Guerra 1915-1918 Sante Gobbo
(Italian Language - Spanish American War - First World War)

Milano Italy: Societa Editrice Sonzogno, 1898. F 164 pages; black and white illustrations, maps, portraiture of Spanish & American military personnel (even a smaller line-drawing of Buffalo Bill) from this conflict and with a nice triple-panel folding color map 'Il Teatro Della Guerra Fra La Spagna e gli Stati Uniti' a Supplemento al "Corriere Della Sera" (pub. Milano - Stabilim. A Vallardi, Via Moscova, 40); Italian text throughout; (title page continued): "Cronaca splendidamente illustrata degli avvenimenti che si svolsero per terra e per mare fra la Spagna e gli Stati Uniti dell'America del Nord"; original illustrated paper wraps bound in, as is a second printed title & half title, at back; the first 16 pages including title are chewed away at top right corner, the first few of these leaves with several words lost and not of the sense of the text, few leaves at back with more minor corner-chipping; bound into a hardcover volume, approx. 9" x 12 1/4" size, with gilt titles and decoration, white faux vellum spine and back cover, with some edgwear and rubbing, dulling of titles; (with) a double sided broadside or flyer as a First World War memorial, "Sopra..." approx. 9 1/2" x 12", printed in two columns on both sides by Tip. Istituto Artigianelli - Brescia; side one with "Saffica" poetic memorial and the other side with two, "Sopra un Monumento consistente in una sentinella che veglia sopra uno scoglio" and "Alle Madri e Vedove di guerra"; all of these are invoked or sanctified at the end with the words 'Sante Gobbo' (the ancient holy hunchback of luck & prosperity of Italy); broadside with old fold line, little corner crease, very good condition as is the map; the previous owner, who we presume commissioned the binding, has also added a dedication on the front two (blank) endpapers dated 1971, and a coffin-shaped cardstock cutout and ink titles of the book with artistic ink flourishes as decorations is tipped-in there as well; overall, good condition and an interesting Italian language history of the Spanish-American conflict as well as an unusual Italian WWI memorial - an OCLC search reveals one holding for the book and none for this broadside. Good Hardcover (Item ID: 22019)
