F Cabinet card albumen photograph mounted on cardstock; with the Gutekunst 712 Arch Street studio noted on back; identified as this Unitarian minister and author of some prominence in the 19th century; William Henry Furness (1802-1896) graduate of Harvard Divinity School, whose "...life and thought spanned the awesome changes of the nineteenth century...occupied an intellectual middle ground between traditional liberal Christian rationalism and the experimentation with non-Christian forms of theism that emerged as a radical and growing philosophical strain within the Unitarian community. Sensitive to the intellectual claims of biblical criticism and Transcendentalism, Furness nonetheless used innovative thinking to reinforce the authority and influence of Christianity as a unique revelation."
