(John B. Coppinger)

New York: Sherman & Co., 1855. F 235 pages; a tale of adventure among Winnebago and Chippeway Indians in early 19th century America, attributed to John B. Coppinger; with an interesting footnote concerning Native American methods of time-telling; mention made of other tribes and of accounts of warfare, village life and interactions between tribes; Wright American Fiction Vol. II 1851-1875, No. 632; previous owner names and pencil inscriptions on front endpapers; bound in the original decoratively blindstamped faded plum cloth, spine titles dulled to obscurity; some edge tips wear and rubbing, small old spot on binding; some foxing and staining to contents, one leaf with closed tear, no loss; in good condition and an early literary effort with the adventures centered around Native Americans, even-handedly treated and of cultural, anthropological interest; seemingly more accessible than J. F. Cooper's effort with the Last of the Mohicans 30 years prior, with much more action and dialogue than in the earlier tale. Good Hardcover (Item ID: 21032)
