Atkinson's introductory comments on the book in the Foreword; illustrated throughout with small stories and tales by the prolific Susan Hale (1833-1910) writer and painter; Caroline P. Atkinson, Hale's friend, edited and published selections of her letters - "...Hale left a legacy of enthusiasm and intellectual accomplishment that had a lasting effect on her family and associates..." (Erica E. Hirshler in the ANB); dustjacket over matching paper covered brown illustrated boards; "First Printing" stated on copyright page; some tips, edgewear, darkening to jacket, corners with some chipping, front panel split from spine; nevertheless, the jacket presentable and has done it's job well in protecting the boards which are in very good condition as are the contents.
