Nicely engraved portrait of this Union Army General from a photograph, engraved for the Rebellion Record 1861; image size approx. 5" x 6", avg. 2 1/2" margins all around; John Adams Dix (b. Boscowen, N.H. 1798-d. New York 1879) soldier, lawyer, statesman. Veteran of the War of 1812, New York Secretary of State, became Senator for the state in 1845, became Secretary of the U.S. Treasury 1861, did excellent if unspectacular service as major general notably as commander of the departments of Maryland and of the East, after the war became minister to France, became governor of New York afterwards.
