Lemuel Towers, 1859. 16 page pamphlet; mostly concerned with this representatives "take" on the Monroe Doctrine of expansion for the Union, a canal at the isthmus in Central America, his concern for the U.S. southern border, California and Mexican relations and efforts to give stability to the region; Samuel Sullivan Cox (1824-1889); active in securing legislation for development of the West, a liberal, independent thinker; after the Civil War he favored complete amnesty for Confederates; consistently opposed centralizing tendencies in government and infringement of personal rights; original self-wraps, disbound, front a and back sheets loose; 6" x 9 1/2" approx. size; some edge, tips wear to original paper; some dustiness; good condition.
