F. 87 pages; the "Free Soil Party" which was the legitimate precursor of the Republican Party , was a combination of political abolitionists, anti-slavery factions and Democratic defectors; prominent in the elections of 1848 and 1852; the party nominated Martin Van Buren and Charles Adams for the Presidential ticket, who were unsuccessful in their bid for office; however, the "Free Soilers" succeeded in sending representatives to the House and Senate who by their ability exercised an influence out of proportion to their number (DAB); list of persons present, addreses of Edward L.
