Beers and is typical of their cartographic work of the time. The publisher's preface notes that the book's "...plan is taken from some European guide-books; the city being divided into convenient walks, in the course of which mention is made of all the places of interest; and at the close of the walk a concise history of each is given. Attention has been mainly directed to the old houses yet standing..."; the text pages also with 12 pages of occasionally illustrated advertisements for various Portsmouth businesses & services. Front endpaper with the handwritten note & small book-number stamp of collector Dr. George R. Brush; long in the U.S. Navy; who served as a surgeon and medical inspector from 1861-1894 noting his presence at "Portsmouth N. Hampshire April 28th to May 0th 1878."
