xvi + 112 + 16 pages of advertisements at back (some unopened); black and white illustrated throughout; with text describing dozens of Japanese pottery-ware, the history of the kilns, types of clay and characteristics; with a list of potters and decorators who exhibited at the Paris Exhibition of 1878 and with a useful index. This was the South Kensington Museum's informational publication, "...made for the Philadelphia Exhibition...for the Japanese Section...of the older Japanese Ceramic wares..." (from the Preface) Printed by Charles Dickens and Evans Crystal Palace Press. Small, faint previous ownership stamp on the title page of collector Dr. George R. Brush, U.S. Navy; served as a surgeon and medical inspector from 1861-1894 & often on-station in various locales in Japan; a few tiny blue-pencil 'tick' marks in the margins of the text, recording his reading annotation. Approx. 5 1/2" x 7 7/8" size; the original illustrated blue paper softcovers bound into green cloth, with gilt and black titles & decoration on the top cover & gilt spine titles. Some edge, tips wear to the binding; contents clean and in very good condition.
