This is the slightly later printing of the Boston first appearance of the book, which was later expanded to include two volumes. Reese, 'Stamped with National Character Nineteenth Century Color Plate Books,' 1999 exhibition catalog item # 20, noting that "…Hovey's work on American fruits was the most lavish treatment of the subject prior to the Civil War. …can claim to be the first major publication illustrated with chromolithographs…" Approx. 7 1/2" x 11" size; bound in full black leather with gilt fruit-basket ornaments surrounded by elaborate twining leaf-and-flower gilt decorations, spine profusely gilt & titled, all edges gilt, gilt roll-tool on board edges & inner turn-ins. Some light edge, tips wear to the binding and very presentable; title page edge darkened; occasional spotting and foxing within, plates are by and large very clean and in very good condition.
