Text interspersed with black and white illustrations; contents include a "Critical Examination of Mr. Darwin's Work, "On the Origin of Species," in relation to the complete Theory of the Causes of the Phenomena of Organic Nature." Previous owner name & address of George R. Brush, M.D. on the front endpaper, along with his small collection number-sticker; he served in the U.S. Navy as a Surgeon & Medical Inspector, from 1861-1894 (his death) and was often on-station in the Pacific and various ports in South America during the round of his naval duties. On the final page of the text, he has written "Completed reading on board the Str. Guatemala near Punta arenas May 25th, 1865, Proff. Seebach of Gottingen on board." Dr. Karl Albert Ludwig von Seebach (1839 - 1880) German volcanologist; at this point he was on his Central American trip, investigating geologic phenomena in the region. Approx. 5 1/4" x 8 1/4" size; bound in original dark green pebbled-finish cloth covered boards, paper spine label. Some light edge, tips wear, cloth color a little streaky; spine label darkened; in very good condition.
