The half-title page, illustration & title page of this volume followed by a blank sheet with (2) pen & ink sketches tipped-on, one being a group of robed classical figures with colors added, the paper in an octagonal form approx. 4 3/4" x 5 1/2"; the other sketch directly below, in black and white: a small standing winged putto-form - cupid holding a bow, approx. 1 1/2" x 2" size. Both artworks are tipped-on to the larger blank sheet and are outlined in simple ink rules. Below the imagery is the penciled statement: "These original designs by Mr. Strutt were given to me by the author.." The facing sheet with a portrait of Strutt engraved by Osborne after Humphry. This is Vol. I (only) of Joseph Strutt's biographical dictionary of engravers, viii + 29 + 368 pages, illustrated with plates in sepia and with the 'directions to the binder' sheet at back. Joseph Strutt (1749-1802) British antiquary and engraver, "…his Biographical Dictionary of Engravers, a historical account of the art of engraving and of engravers from the earliest time to his own day that has remained the basis of all later studies of a similar kind. …one of the first to realize the potential value of visual material as a historical source rather than as simply serving an illustrative purpose. He showed an early appreciation of the intrinsic merit of medieval art and was unusual in producing near-facsimile engraved reproductions of the originals…" (Jennifer Harris in the ODNB) The front endpaper with the small bookplate of Scottowe Hall Library. The book a nicely wide-margined copy, approx. 10" x 12 1/2" size; bound in marbled-paper covered boards, leather spine and corners, gilt titles, marbled endpapers to match. The spine covering is chipped away, the boards and corners worn, hinge leather split, front and back boards detached; contents including the artworks are clean and in good condition. Item #25528
