C. 1892 - 1918 Group of Letters From the Winne and Peacock Families in Porter Corners and Saratoga Springs New York
Saratoga, New York: Not Published, 1892. F. Approx. 30 pieces of correspondence, of varying length and content, concerning the Peacock and Winne families - apparently Lottie Peacock married Henry Winne - covering their activities & that of family during the last part of the 19h century and early 20th; there is some real estate and inheritance intrigue recounted in the earliest letter, a schemer trying to get deeds assigned supposedly in order to get the funds necessary to turn out old horses to pasture (from racing?); a comet observation is noted in 1895; requests for Papa to provide shoes for attending school; the 1896 Saratoga football club are "peaches but rotten" - having just lost to Waterford 10-0; one of the sisters writing is teaching school, with many of the 'scholars' absent with measles; one of the girl relations has a very handsome Christmas present list, including gold rings and a mink muff; stories of hard work at the foundry, on the land and "in the woods"; also some news of community activities - concerts, dances, family get- togethers and holidays; farm chores, weather and illnesses, travel, more; some interesting enclosures include a circular from Chase Brothers Co. nurseries in Rochester, who offer 'premiums' of new collars and ties and a special of $ 5.00 for sales goals to be met by purveying their seeds and bulbs; one holiday card with a Palmer Cox - style color Brownie illustration; a note from Fellows Pianos & Player Pianos in Gloversville, N.Y.; a black-and-white illustrated 2-sided advertisement from the Charles William Stores New York City, touting their 'semi-made skirts'; a few pages of school notes from 1890s, a soap order receipt; in 1918 a request of A.C. Winne(y) postmaster for a change of address; and later, a typed note from D.E. Harrington dealer in Marble and Granite Monuments in 1931 calculating cost of a memorial for a family member - on the back of this is a rather crudely-written 'birth dates of the Winne family' - useful genealogy information; a much later letter in 1950 reveals that Henry & Lottie are still extant; about 25 letters in their original mailers; some mailers not matched-up with contents and some empty; most with postal cancellations and their postage; some wear and tear, soiling; contents in good condition, some crudely written in pencil, others boldly and in ink, in varying hands and literacy; an interesting group of correspondence from the country in upstate New York.
