1898 Broadside and Sample Ballot for the Question: Why You Should Vote for Hempstead as the County Seat of the New County of Nassau

Two items; a small broadside, approx. 5 3/8" x 7 3/8" size, printed black on thin tan paper stock, with the headline "Why You Should Vote for Hempstead as the County Seat of the new County of Nassau. The law requires that the County seat shall be located within one mile of the present station of the LI.R.R. at Hempstead, Hicksville or Mineola. The people of the Village of Hempstead by voluntary subscription offer you FREE AND CLEAR any one of several sites - to be selected as provided by law...AND EVERY ONE IN THE HEART OF THE VILLAGE and not out on the plains as some have said..."; and going on to extol the valuable amenities of that town - application for a trolley system, 8 macadamized roads, flagged walks and paved streets well shaded, banks, newspapers, schools and various trades, more and noting that "...Hempstead is the only village named having these advantages..."; (with) a 'Sample County Seat Ballot' printed black on thin pink paper stock, approx. 9" x 12" which urges voters to mark their actual votes as shown in this example, in the positive for the Hempstead choice; (Hicksville and Mineola were the other contenders - Mineola won the vote and was thus established as the Nassau County seat); no printer or publisher noted, or date; this was voted on in November of 1898 after the formation of the county; light wear, dustiness, old fold lines; in very good condition; interesting 19th century Nassau County political history ephemera.
