1887 Signed handwritten letter by George Parsons Lathrop to Publisher James Osgood

A handwritten letter; dated March 2 (18)87, 29 Washington Square New York; a humorous and lengthy reply to the publisher Osgood's invitation to dine with the "Kinsmen" at the Continental; Lathrop gives his regrets and states that "...I shall make astronomical calculations & drink a solemn glass of wine all by myself, in honor of the occasion, at the hour appointed for the feast. Sincerely, your Kinsman George Parsons Lathrop"; George Parsons Lathrop (1851-1898) American poet, novelist, well-known editor especially of the definitive works of Nathaniel Hawthorne (Lathrop married Hawthorne's daughter); written on 3 sides of a paper 8 3/4 " x 9" approx.; some splitting along old fold-lines, no loss; a little ink-transfer from one line that had been deleted by Lathrop; in very good condition.
