U.S.A. Modern Screen, 1946. First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good. Item #028701

Biographical details on 22 band leaders, singers & groups; black and white illustrated throughout. Information includes a photo, personal biography, description of the band & its style and a list of recordings. Including Harry James, Glenn Miller, Bob Crosby, Sammy Kaye, Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey, Horace Heldt, Fred Waring, Xavier Cugat, Guy Lombardo, Woody Herman, Cab Calloway, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Bob Eberly, Ray Eberle, The Andrews Sisters, Kate Smith, Helen O Connell and Dinah Shore. Basically, a fanzine produced by Modern Screen, who "picked a national jive authority" Frank Stacy, the New York editor of "Downbeat" to write the booklet: "...Frank knows all the big names, and, well- he's been around. Gets in on all the jam sessions and knows what makes a band swing..." Undated and circa 1946 from the internal evidence; the Glenn Miller article notes his U.S. Army commission in 1942 and does not note his death in 1944; Waring & Cugat are noted as born in 1940 and their (then-current) ages of 46. Previous owner has penned-in the ages of the performers in the margin at their respective article. Approx. 5 1/2" x 8"; black and white illustrated stapled softcover. A little surface creasing & wear; in very good condition.
