Inscribed and signed by the author-artist on the front endpaper, to American lawyer & social rights activist Lloyd K. Garrison (1897 - 1991) and his wife Ellen. The first, dated December 1971 to Ellen & Lloyd and handwritten, signed John, accompanied this portfolio: "...This book just came from the publisher..." and sending best wishes. The second letter, dated August 2, 1976 is typed and sent to Ellen, with content concerning a Canaday lecture delivered in Seattle, his theme on the re-legitimization of 19th century American painting and with his candid exposition of the reasoning behind his support and optimism concerning the genre. Signed John and with a postscript in manuscript; this letter with the original postal-used mailing envelope. Portfolio approx. 8 3/4" x 11 1/8" size; purple paper softcover, titles in pink; light wear; in very good condition.
