Two letters: the first dated November 17, 1936 on U Penn Law letterhead, one page and signed Alex, regarding congratulations to the recipient's notice of upcoming marriage. The second, also on letterhead, of December 15, 1953, 1 & 1/3 pages, and signed Alec. This with good content regarding civil liberties: "...I share with you your feeling that the Attorney General's announced condemnation of the Guild prior to any form of hearing is shocking. I am now President of the Greater Philadelphia Branch of the American Civil Liberties Union and, as a lifetime defender of civil rights, I deplore the complete disdain for due process with which many governmental officials and Congressional committees have pilloried individuals and associations who have incurred their displeasure..." American law educator & attorney Alexander Hamilton Frey (1898-1981) was "...A creative thinker and a stimulating teacher, he played a formative role in the development of this Law School for thirty-seven years, from 1932 to 1968. His interest in the law as an instrument of constructive social change was shown by his work in the fields of business associations and labor law…Outside the University, he was frequently sought and served as an arbitrator of labor disputes. He also played a leading role in the creation of the Greater Philadelphia Branch of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), as well as its Pennsylvania Branch, of which he became the first President. During the McCarthy era, he was so disappointed by the failure of the American Bar Association to oppose restrictions on civil liberties that he resigned, but his letter of resignation was such an eloquent defense of civil liberties that the Association reversed its position in favor of his..." Letters approx. 8 1/2" x 11" size; 1936 letter with filing-holes at top; copy-letter paper browned, edge-chipped; 1953 letter on very good quality U. of Pennsylvania watermarked paper; in very good condition.
