48 pages; illustrated with black & white photographs by South African photographer Guy Tillim. Title page inscribed and signed by Gladys Thomas and with a short, related poem in her hand above: "Where they walked/lilies will grow/and we shall hear/our children's laughter." Gladys Thomas (1944 - 2022) South African poet, short story writer & playwright, author of children's stories whose work was awarded the S.A. Order of Ikhamanga for "...Outstanding contribution to poetry and short stories through which she exposed the political injustices and human suffering of the apartheid regime and for raising international consciousness about the ravages of apartheid." (ref. the Award site) Preface to the stories by Denyse Smith, Cape Town, who noted that: "...In June this year when Crossroads was burning, Gladys Thomas and I want to one of the church halls to visit the children being sheltered there. They told Gladys their stories..." Crossroads is an area of Cape Town, S.A. and the scene of much violence, destruction of homes, and the displacement of tens of thousands. Approx. 5 3/4" x 8 1/4" size; printed and illustrated red stapled paper softcovers; a little sunning and slight wear; in very good condition.
