Lee's General Order Number Nine Farewell to the Army of Northern Virginia

Chicago, Ill. The Lakeside Press R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company, 1956. Lakeside Press Edition. Portfolio. Very Good. Item #027905

The frontispiece, loosely inserted at the cover, is a faithful Lakeside Press reproduction, even to the light blue writing paper of the time, of Robert E. Lee's General Order No. 9 letter to his troops: "...Various copies of this General Order were made, and bear Lee's signature, but this one has two virtues: first, its excellent physical condition; and, second, the evidence on its face that it passed through military channels to Brigadier General W.H. Stevens, Chief Engineer, Army of Northern Virginia, and is therefore an official copy and not merely a "souvenir"…." With an accompanying brochure having (8) pages of text, giving the historical background on the event, including passages quoted from General Grant's memoirs; with a small black and white illustration of the Appomattox surrender scene. The creative notes at back give the summary of thinking which guided the printing of this piece. The portfolio approx. 10 1/4" x 15" size; light gray textured paper covers, with illustrated paper title label on the front cover; slight wear; in very good condition.
