Misc.: 1854 January 28 to Mary Barrell in NYC care of George Barrell, Esq from Henry Cheever, recounting with great emotion and much descriptive Christian imagery the death-bed scene of Mrs. Cheever: "…It was on the memorable night of the 17tj, Tuesday, at twenty minutes after Eleven, that the light of our dwelling went out, I should say melted, in with the radiance of heaven 'As quietly shut the eye of day,' so peacefully closed those heavenly orbs that had been smiling on us with unutterable tenderness…the scene was inexpressibly solemn, as life ebbed almost inexorably away, the breathing fainter, fainter, & intermittent, until without a gasp the tearful exit was accomplished, & the Soul released…Our dear Mother's sickness of only 22 days from the first of her complaining, was not at all alarming until ten days before her death. It was very insidious & slow in its character & progress up to the first two weeks, but hurried swiftly…She suffered intensely from burning fever …sore throat and at length forbade her swallowing or speaking. But notwithstanding her extreme anguish from disease, her patience was perfect - A progressive work of sanctification we See to have been going on all the year. He heart was overflowing with Christian holy love which made her unnaturally dear to us… " 4 sides, with another, smaller 4-sided letter from Henry Cheever.
