Autograph, "Yours faithfully" with her 1 Mansfield Place Richmond S.W. address & date Jany. 10th '92. Rhoda Broughton (1840 - 1920) British novelist, "...In Belinda, and in A Widower Indeed (1891), which she co-authored with Elizabeth Bisland, Broughton expresses some of her exasperation with the close, gossipy world of academic Oxford, where she was ostracized in some circles as a result of her supposedly shocking fiction. Belinda's plot owes something to Middlemarch, with its heroine marrying an older scholar—believed, like Casaubon, to have been modelled on Mark Pattison—and finding her emotions and her activities severely restricted. Broughton herself was famous for her conversation, for her tea parties, which amounted to literary salons, and for her entourage of small dogs. Henry James was a good friend...a productive novelist, and wrote fast; she could complete a novel in six weeks. After the demise of the three-decker novel in 1894, she took readily to single-volume publication, which suited the punchy and aphoristic qualities of her prose...."
