Bibliographica Genealogica Americana: An Alphabetical Index to American Genealogies and Pedigrees Contained in State, County and Town Histories, Printed Genealogies, and Kindred Works

Albany, N.Y. Joel Munsell's Sons, 1886. 245 pages; printed double column; (from the Preface): ''...With the assistance furnished by this volume, no difficulty will be experienced in collecting needed information...More than twenty thousand names are here alphabetically arranged...The present edition, will be found to contain about 6,500 more references than the second edition of 1878..."; with an extensive list of titles referred to at front; this publication being his greatest contribution to genealogy, by American librarian Daniel Steele Durrie (1819 - 1892) "...As a librarian, Durrie was an early professional who collected and preserved materials for the use of the public. As a genealogist, he brought some order to a growing chaos of disparate independent efforts with his bibliography, and he set a standard of quality and comprehensiveness with his own publications. As a historian, Durrie stressed a populist slant by emphasizing daily events of towns and regions and the lives of the uncelebrated. While not a social historian in the late twentieth-century sense, Durrie was moving in that direction in contradistinction to mainstream historians. Research libraries, the art of genealogy, and the focus of history...were invigorated by Durrie's life and work..." (Leslie H. Fishel in the ANB); previous owner name of Liston D. Cary Glasco Kansas 1887 on front and back endpapers; approx. 6" x 9 1/4" size; bound in the original plain light green cloth hardcover, gilt spine titles; edge, tips wear and fraying to the corners of the binding, front board with discoloration at bottom edge; couple of stray marks in text; contents in very good condition.
