Collection of materials include: a large group of photographs, many by Howard of Sag Harbor, Morris of Southampton and by other photographers of Long Island, Brooklyn and New York City - Edsall, Robbins, Pendleton, Dana, others - centering mostly around Rogers family members' portraiture - we note that at least one of the women pictured here, Atala Rogers, was a teacher in this school district and hence gives some reference to the district material; also, many of the the photos will have notations as to age of sitter and date of photograph: 1898 & 1901 Gilbert Pierson Rogers, Charles Wheeler Rogers, Hildreth Rogers, Ada Rogers (2), Ethel Rogers, Bessie P. Rogers and a group picture of Ada, Ethel & Courtney Rogers - at least one of these women, with the adult photo, became Mrs. Henry Rogers, Alfred Pierson Rogers, Walter T. Rogers; Gilbert Pierson Rogers (several - baby and child portraits), ; Pierson: an ambrotype, with name handwritten on a paper slip on back of case, of Albert Pierson and with another, unidentified ambrotype of the same period, both without their upper covers. Mary Pierson, May, Alice and a tintype in paper cover identified as "Dash the dog, Pierson girls brought for their old home"; Topping: May, Alice, Elsie, group in 1895, again in 1901 as young ladies, and with 5 older H.S. graduation from standing portraits of the sisters; and one Alice Gardiner Topping Halsey "...in her Bridal attire."; one cabinet card of Rev. E.K. Fanning 1902; a portrait by Seeley of Bridgeport Ct. of Clifford J. Foster 1909; a couple of portraits (one taken while she's astride a miniature horse) of the child Emma Dorothy Morris, 1918 and 1924; cabinet card of Joseph Dolan Sag Harbor "..my (Mathis) brother." (bottom of photo cracked) Grandmother Dolan taken by Johnson in N.Y.; one photo of Robert White Downs as a baby; a cabinet card of the Bridgehampton windmill when it was near the railroad tracks, (3 1/2" x 4 3/4" image and mounted to a larger card) the image with unusual gold metallic tones to the surface, one 4 3/4"x 6 3/4" (image, mounted to larger card) of what appear to be mill(?) engine works (not identified) and a photograph of a picture or drawing of the 1842 Cook, N.Y. drawing of "South East View of the Old Meeting House at Bridgehampton Long-Island" and which has another photographically-printed note that the building was "...erected and consecrated to the service of God by the Presbyterian Society A.D. 1737," and about a dozen unidentified photographs, mostly cabinet card style, some of which appear to be of relations or of the same Rogers-Pierson-Topping family group, mostly in good or very good condition, some with some wear and soiling or that have been edge-trimmed as for album insertion, with the Hayes & Betts Booksellers & Stationers photo album they were contained in, which has a presentation on the front endpaper, "Walter T. Rogers. Sagaponack N.Y. Presented by his Father and Mother Christmas 1899." album with some wear and rubbing, some of the card inserts have been torn when photos removed; and (with) an ephemeral paper item, printed paper tipped-on to a larger gray construction paper sheet, approx. 5" x 8", entitled 1859 - 1911 "Old Academy" Re-Union Day Tuesday August 8 Com. Charles H. Howell Toastmaster Toasts by Rev. Frank Howell - Joseph Dayton - Hon. E. F. Post - William D. Halsey with the menu listed below - at top a sepia-toned image of the "Old Academy" East Hampton; East Hampton School District No. 4 ledger of 148 numbered pages; with material filling approx. 95 of those, mostly full pages of data. Dated starting 1884 and the last entries 1907 & 1908. Beginning with the Nov. 1884 to Aug. 1885 'Statement of New School House...' and which has entries of date, payee - ie., George Edwards for Labor $ 20.00...Elisha King for Lumber...William H. parsons for Brick....W.B. Bailey for Paint and Painting...David Talmage for Labor .. (and more) for masons, Brick, doors and windows, lumber, ceiling, bag of hair, to the L.I. Railroad,, glass putty and oil, Julia A. Bailey for making curtains, more and with totals. Followed by lists of the Teachers Wages and including 'School Opened Oct 27 Alice Miller Teacher School Opened on Gardiners I. Dec. 8 Emma Edwards Teacher - Opened in the New House Feb 9 1885 George A. Miller Principal Alice Miller assistant. With a list of paid-outs for wages, for Alice Miller, Emma Edwards, George A. Miller and later with additions for Jos. D. Parsons, Carrie Miller, John L. Gardiner and showing amount of tax raised. The following year noting a temporary change of regime, with 1885 Alice Miller as Principal, Julia A. Bailey as Teacher on Gardiners Island and back to George A. Miller as principal later in the year. New teachers added in the wages list of Annie F. Hedges and Julia A. Bailey and the totals. The following pages' statements become more detailed as the school's premises and routine settles in, with notations for Mrs. Ellen King for Clean School House, John L. Gardiner for rent for School, Henry H. Schellinger for repairs on house, Foster Parsons for 10 loads of wood and cutting same, and very detailed information both for the East Hampton and Gardiners I. schools for purchases - a broom for the school, pipe for the Gardiners Island stove, day work and more; notations continue for purchases for a "Book for Dist. Clerk," cutting wood and making fires, sweeping and cleaning schoolhouses. Evidently some legal issues and acrimony concerning the building came early, with notations "...to Defend the Action Brought by Sarah Parsons and George Parsons Against William B. Bailey Trustee and John S. Penney George Edwards, Henry H. Schellinger as Building Committee...." which not only incurred expense, but sent Bailey to Albany possibly to sort out the dispute; subpoenas paid, car 'fair' to Riverhead, law stenographer, more; the years roll on with changes in teaching staff, workers, levels of expense, for 'library purposes' with some interesting notations on actual purchases: song books, general 'library' books, books for children, and occasionally pairs of shoes; By 1903 "Miss Pamelia, M. Harder Commenced School at a Salary of eight-dollars and fifty cents per week and Mr. A.D. Miller's pay was 12.50 per week; By 1908, there are entries for taking a census, replacement of pumps and moving into the modern age with expenses for the telegram and telephone service; at front is a small printed sticker of "Mrs. M. J. Young-Fulton American & Foreign Teachers Agency. 23 Union Square, New York" from which we speculate some of the teachers may have been hired - the last page with an entry has penciled at top "Albany Teachers Agency 81 Chapel St. Albany N.Y." presumably a similar outfit; 3 bits of paper ephemera are pinned-in at back, one for the Long Island Railroad Co., 189(6), for deliverance of an organ, a small folder from Montgomery Ward & Co. concerning this "Windsor" brand of musical instrument made by the company and the certificate of warranty from the Co. for the organ; bound in the original red marbled-paper covered boards, red leather spine and corners, ledger-style, very worn, some pages evidently torn out at back (most probably blanks- the back section of the book not used), nevertheless good condition; (with) a 1915 "...List of taxes assessed and levied by the trustees of School District No. 4 in the town of East Hampton..." 304 numbered pages, with about two-thirds having pages of information; with an alphabetical thumb-guide at front for all the names, with the corresponding pages for their tax notations, given with Map, block, lot, value, tax assessed; with updated information as people may have moved or died or sold property and including assessments made on commercial firms and many of the oyster beds owned on the East End, including several by the Gardiner family; the Warrant ot Trustees (printed form) is tipped-in at back and signed by the Trustees, M. H. Edwards and J. Lionel Talmage; laid-in is a printed form from The County Review Suffolk's Leading Weekly Hagen & Lee, Props. Riverhead, addressing tax collectors and noting that they have in supply the tax collecting books needed for their labors; bound in light gray printed cloth, red leather corners and spine label, good condition; (with) 1916 ledger titled "General Resident and Non-Resident Property School District No. 4 East Hampton Town" 272 pages, similar format with thumb guides & warrant signed, about 1/2 filled with information, this time using simply the form of acres - value - Tax as the basis for personal and for commercial assessment; the thumb-guide 'lists' of names system not used, just simply organized alphabetically in content; (with) 1916 similar ledger, this however titled "Assessment Roll Sub-Divided Tract Section School District No. 4 East Hampton Town" also with thumb-guides not used and with 312 pages, some signatures loosened and divided by areas: Hampton Terrace, Montauk View, Estates of Montauk, Kingstown Park, Harbor View, Montauk Manor, Montauk Highlands; much of the properties listed owned by commercial development or real estate companies and individuals, some also owned by Suffolk County. Set out by name, with owner address and Map, Lot, Block, Value, Tax, columns as the other ledgers and with the signed Warrant of Trustees at back, similarly bound bound in light gray printed-design cloth, red leather corners and spine label, cover titles printed in manuscript, good condition; an interesting group of material centered around the lives of several interrelated families, the schools and the society of the eastern Hamptons at this time, of much historical and cultural interest, with genealogy, details of land development and use.
