Pencil inscribed, signed, dated at the bottom margin of the art of a group of 3 grim U.S. Generals in uniforms; Black and white woodcut in a blocky mode, very well done & inked; apparently given to James "From Here to Eternity" Jones by the artist; image 7 1/2" x 6" approx. size, short margins; tipped on to old cardstock backer, not glued down; with the original Eli Jacobi N.Y. studio stamps on back in very good condition, interesting provenance association with the wartime theme and Jones' intense interest in the subject. Eli Jacobi (1898-1984) Painter, etcher, illustrator, cartoonist, block printer born in Khar'kov, Ukraine Russia died in New York, lived in Greenwich Village until the 1970s thereafter in Far Rockaway, studied at the Art Student League & NAD, member United Am. Artists, WPA contributions especially of compassionate views of the Bowery section of New York City, illustrator for the New York Times, Post, World, the Nation, Saturday Review, more. (WWW in American Art, 1999).

Small pamphlet, consisting of a light blue 'linen' finish paper cover, with the title "Marine Mosaic?" and with no further authorship or date or printer indicated; with 3 interior 'panels' with illustrations of: Mullioned Window, Memorial Window (Frederick Schroeder) and a 4-light group of Yacht Windows; the front inner panel of the cover describes "Marine Mosaic is the artistic adaptation of shells, stones and glass, strongly cemented to form effects, beautiful in color and unusual in design...originated in the studio at Harbor Villa, Shelter Island, N.Y...." and describing some of its decorative uses; approx. 3 1/4" x 8 3/8" size; with soiling, old stains on the covers and contents and wear along old fold lines, splitting; the illustrations of the work clear and good, and evidence of the skill of the creator & inventor of the technique, Shelter Island artist Walter Cole Brigham (1870-1941) painter and craftsperson, studied with William Merritt Chase, Siddons Mowbray and others, member of the Art Students League, whose work in mosaic may still be seen at some of the churches on the Island as well as at the Brooklyn Museum (1999 WWW in American Art); we speculate that this 'flyer' may have been a self-published promotional tool created by him to publicize his work; in good condition overall and an interesting piece of Long Island arts & crafts history ephemera.

115 pages; tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait engraving of Maj. Gen. Charles Lee, engraved by G.R. Hall, another rather uncomplimentary engraving by A.H. Ritchie after B. Rashbrooke and tipped-in at back a large folded facsimile of the letter of General Lee to General Gates Basking Ridge 1776; tipped-in at front is a letter signed by the author, 2 pages, addressed to Joseph A. Copp, D.D., written from the Library of the New York Hist.l Soc. New York City Jan 31 1865, regarding a paper that Copp had read before the N.E. Hist. Geneaological Society concerning General Lee and hereby sending him a copy of (this) book with the hopes of entering into correspondence: "...I shall be very glad if any new researches, or the application of the most rigid principles of historical criticism shall enable me to change the views which I have expressed-for I truly desire the vindication of the truth of history in all such studies and investigations...I am perfectly ready to acknowledge my errors, if they are pointed out to me..." and respectfully asking for a continuing look at the evidence that Copp may have in his possession; George Henry Moore (1823-1892) American librarian, historian, bibliographer, very active in work of New-York Historical Society 1941-91, superintendent of Lenox Library, New York City. (DAB); original red pebbled-cloth binding, gilt cover titles; some edge, tips wear and rubbing to boards; bottom 1/4 part of spine covering chipped away; top board detaching, block's sewing secure; good condition, good American Revolutionary War scholarly research material, especially interesting for the inclusion of the author's signed correspondence.
