Collection includes: a pencil sketch titled Revolution Cottage Orient, approx. 6" x 6" (on 6" x 9" sheet) and on another fold of the same sheet, 6" x 9" are three more sketches - another Orient home on the shoreline, a small sailboat and an interior view with lamp - paper darkened, old burn-spot at edge of 'lamp' sketch, edge-chipped a bit, sketches good and with good detail; with another sketch of a stylized butterfly corner-ornament, perhaps for an illustration - done in colored crayons on a 5" x 7 3/4" sheet, the art about 3" x 3" - on the back of this is a tracing of the butterfly in pencil and above that a sketch of a sailing boat pictured in a seashell-cornered frame - sailing vessels being one of Davis' favorite subjects - this sheet with a couple of closed tears and darkened a bit, artwork good; (these are not signed); (with) a (32) page double-space typed manuscript with corrections in Davis' hand for a book by him "Tentative Title: From Many Ports" - that surveys the history of ships and commerce, especially American sailing boats, with corrections in his hand throughout. In good condition, light wear, with old paper-clip rustmarks at top of sheets and with an index card written in his hand stating that "...Book idea specimen Mss. & 7 sheets of drawings sent Little, Brown Apr 1/35 Ret." (drawings not part of this ms.) with the first class mailing envelope from Little Brown that held the ms. papers - Davis "...had a great enthusiasm for sailing vessels and made a careful study of their structures and the details of their sails and riggings..." (quote from a Oysterponds Hist. Soc. exhibit notice of his works - with a copy of this notice here as well) - as far as we can determine, this book was not published; (with) a copy of the French arts review magazine 'Revue Du Vrai Et Du Beau' of Paris, issue of December 10, 1924 with a typed translation of an article about Davis, with corrections in his hand, that his found within a larger piece on "The Exhibition at Newport" by Count Chabrier and the article illustrates 2 paintings by W.S.D. - the translation is 2 typed pages, both magazine & trans. in good condition; (with) Art Exhibition catalogues in every one of which are found one or more works by William Steeple Davis, among artistic endeavors of many other prominent artists of the time: 1914 Second Annual art Exhibition Benefit Eastern Long Island Hospital Greenport L.I. C 120 pages; with approximately 250 photographic images in black and white, which cover the ski sports club's seasons of 1953 to 1963, usually 3 1/2" x 4 3/4" format, with several larger 6" x 9" & others which are mostly enlargements of the smaller imagery, recording skiing trips and social events that were held by the club; with several pages of newspaper clippings and club announcement sheets, officer lists, event tickets, publicity and news related to the club, also tipped-in; most of the materials mid-1950s; one especially nice feature is that most of the material and photographs are identified in white ink on the album pages - with also humorous little stick figure skiing-themed artwork that accompany the items within - often, candid, funny comments go along with the images of club members; events including: the Long Island Olympic Ski Ball, with the ladies in their gowns in a beauty competition, Spring picnic, annual dinners, summer camping at Woodcliff Park, ski waxing party, Christmas party (at Charlotte Galligan's house), Bromley and North Creek skiing trip photos and accompanying report on the trip; summer events including water skiing and Fire Island barbecue; various prize-winner items; Halloween party at Lars Jacobsen's; New Year's weekend at Killington Basin & Sugarbush; trips to Hillcrest Inn, Mt. Collection of approximately 150 loose images; various sizes and formats, black and white or sepia tone; from snapshot to 7" x 9" size; not many identified; mostly of American locations, a few of a European trip and about 1/2 dozen of an India trip; a couple of amateur 'panoramas' also, with images numbered to be placed in a row to obtain the overall view; many images of trees that intrigued Gaskill, and towards the end of his long life, photographs which record field trips with friends and family; with a group of images of interior & exterior views of a summer home; a good, albeit worn & creased 5" x 7" image of the young Gaskill as State Forester of New Jersey with a large group of men in a burnt-out-looking forest area, identified on back as "Compliments the New York State College of Forestry Syracuse - Photo by Hugh P. Baker" (who was later Dean of the School); a small group of 4 images from early in his career show a tented campsite and a group of men, in a big pine forest; family, candid and other images are here as well; Alfred Gaskill (1861-1950) American forester & conservation expert, author of much literature in the field and especially respected in the areas of arboriculture & reforestation, born in Philadelphia, in 1898 went to the Biltmore Forestry School in Asheville, North Carolina, continued at Harvard University and at the University of Munich;. The U. S. Bureau of Forestry employed him as a Field Assistant in 1901. By 1905, when the United States Forest Service was formed under Gifford Pinchot, he rose to the rank of Assistant Forest Inspector and was one of those who originated the idea for a National Association of State Foresters, the forerunner being an "Eastern" Association and becoming today's full-fledged National Association of State Foresters; in New Jersey, Gaskill was appointed State Forester on February 1, 1907…"…The State Forester used every opportunity to awaken an interest in forestry, to explain its principles and purposes and to induce every citizen to join in its work. He spent many days giving lectures to interested groups, using colored lantern slides loaned by the United States Forest Service, His audience included Farmers' Institutes, clubs, boards of trade, school boards, schoolteachers, student assemblies. Women's Clubs in the northern part of the State were among the most ardent listeners and supporters. Gaskill encouraged the teaching of forestry in schools in connection with economics and nature study. He promoted the proper observation of Arbor Day and wrote advice to private owners, inspecting their woodlots and preparing woodland management plans…" (2005 Wright, A Century of Forest Stewardship in New Jersey 1905-2005); some images with edgewear and creasing, couple with tears or worse wear; overall, the images are in very good condition and a good glimpse into the life of this noted forestry & conservation advocate.
