Edition No. 5 of 20, Printed on Elese Lumiere paper by the artist, some crimping along top edge; all of the photographs have been professionally mounted (via corners only) and uniformly matted, using archival white stock; while the condition of the photographs is noted as above, there are a couple of factors which make this a very desirable collection of Clergue's work: first, to acquire this collection of 20 large, low-limitation original photographs individually would be extremely tedious and costly; second and most importantly, the impeccable provenance: All of these photographs by the artist Lucien Clergue, a recipient of the Légion d'honneur and more recently honored by being the first photographer given a seat in the prestigious French Academy - were part of the collection of American writer James Jones (1921-1977) of "From Here to Eternity" and National Book Award fame, and are directly from that estate.

An extremely interesting archive of 35 millimeter, 2 1/2" x 2 1/2", 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" , & glass plate photographic black and white negative images taken in Germany and a few other locales in Europe in the period just after the Second World War; filmed on Perutz and Agfa Isopan film, other films; some items can be dated from internal evidence: 1949, 1950s; The collection extremely rich in photographs of all aspects of the industrial arts, from the creation of models of equipment, machinery at fairs and on sites, demonstrations and personnel; with also images of countryside scenery and portraiture, sporting events: gymnastics, cycling with racing photographs & stadium shots, diving, track, motorcycle race (many) including men's and women's events; livestock, probably at a fair or competition; construction sites; automotive and other factories with personnel, equipment, signage; heavy construction, earthmoving equipment cranes, caterpillar tractors and others; burning buildings; many nautical views of harbors, sailboats, transport shipping, including an early wooden hydroplane; much on bridges, architecture and views of important modernist architecture as well as some classic forms, probably all that was left from the War; folk dancing, nightime shots, stage sets & designs; folk and decorative arts, including closeups; transportation including airports and airplanes; many hundreds of images concerning industrial fairs and technology, including medical, automotive; travel: much interior German travel and also Italy-Rome, with shops, architecture, advertising signage, portraiture, Pellizzari electronics signage, market scenes, sidewalk artists at their work; Deutsche Industrie Messe Hannover 1951 with photographs of the technical equipment displays at that fair; German Industries fair 1952; Neubau Einer Festhalle fur Film Theater und Konzert; Rotaprint booth; Dorfgemeinschafts-haus displays; housewares, stoves, food products; jewelry, Wolfgang Assman storefront, graveyards; office and studio equipment; statues and sculpture, including many of livestock and other animals and insects, plants and other natural history which depict interior organs and come apart and which were apparently used as study and educational devices; a trial or exposition, with uniformed attendees and gallery; signage notifying of Russian Zone, British Zone, military personnel, the "Wall"; construction, cookery, laboratory, other occupational activities; photographs of documents, manuscript and printed including musical notation (Bach); much more in this vast collection; we do not have an identified photographer and perhaps with examination and study this may be determined. Seemingly these photographs were done professionally, from the sheer numbers of them and also because many will have crop marks indicated on the glassine envelopes, which indicates perhaps use in periodicals and journals of the time. We have seen at least several negatives in the group which show a couple of men in a booth in an industrial fair which display books and magazines relating to the items photographed here-we speculate that these may be the result of the photographers' work; some of the film on six-shot strips, others single negatives all in original glassine envelopes; two groups on strips are contained in Leitz albums, with the typewritten label: "Leica-Negative...", which we assume that the contained images were taken with that camera, approximately 4000 negs in the two albums; About 7000 negatives in the 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" format contained in G.O. Belhoff 'sleeve'-drawers which slip into outer cases (one group of these are also in a plain cardstock box); in this size there are an additional 1000 or so negatives that are in a drawer and sequestered into bundles with rubber bands, seemingly divided into categories or types of image by a previous owner; the larger-sized negatives, are also divided this way or in bags, about 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" size number about 500 also in a drawer-box; there are approximately 300 glass plates which have been divided into bundles of roughly 25 each also contained in drawers in the same boxed system; glass plates are standard at 3 1/2" x 4 1/2", also same subjects as above; there is an 'odd' and an enigmatic group of only a few images in a small negative tray: two of which state Dec. 10 1940 Max showing a man in a very well-equipped chemistry or physics laboratory. The envelopes regard a couple of images, seemingly not present, dated 1939 in Germany and in the United States, along with a couple of printed photographs of what appear to be family members; and a group of about 13 smaller format 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" glass plates photographs of deformed people, bones, and some which appear to be 'pictures of pictures'-couple of portraits and a some others; we have made prints of several of the negatives and they reproduce very well, with great and professional detail: Documenting via powerful imagery the fabric of the society and the industrial and cultural rebuilding of Germany after the war, done in a prolific and graphic manner.

Three large archival binders housing large scrapbook pages in 11" x 15 3/4" size, about 116 pages; including signed and inscribed pieces, all collected by his friend and physician-companion on the trip, Dr. William S. Schroeder Jr. NYC's Sanitation Commissioner and staunch Walker ally; there are several aspects of this grouping that make it particularly memorable and an important historical compendium: nearly all the people, places and events which were attended by the mayor and his friend are identified; the time is of a limited duration - one month in 1931, a significant period at the beginning of the Depression years, with the growing presence of National Socialism in Germany and concurrent fears and societal upheaval in surrounding countries; the importance of the Mayor of New York elevated his status to the level of a visiting head of state - and the countries he visited lauded and feted him at that level, with the very highest-placed government, scientific and social dignitaries anxious to meet him and cultivate his friendship- of course, the places he stayed and the meals he ate which are recorded in detail here in hotel printed ephemera, wine lists and printed menus and tour itineraries - and were also of the finest quality; Jimmy Walker (1881-1946) had been pressured into resigning the mayoralty as a consequence of the corruption investigation of the Seabury Commission and by then-Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The ex-Mayor then left promptly for this tour of Europe, where far from being disgraced, it is obvious he was feted and honored by the heads of state and society in England, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Hungary; including: a large-format professionally taken and mounted photograph of the dapper Mayor, signed and inscribed to Dr. Schroeder below the image by Jimmy Walker; Nord Deutscher Lloyd Bremen steamship ephemera - maps, first class passenger list book; dozens of newspaper clippings relating to the Mayor's departure, return to NYC, the doctor's work with the Sanitary Commission of NY, and all the visits in Europe made by the Mayor and his friend, including such tidbits as Jimmy Walker being awarded the French Legion of Honor, denying losses at the Monte Carlo gaming tables, taking the 'cure' at Carlsbad spa, with various notables of society and politics throughout the Europe tour and more; there is an ongoing correspondence as well, letters and telegrams concerning the doctor's involvement in the Mutual Insurance business and its sale as well as his work with the sanitary commission; there are literally hundreds of items here, carefully tipped-on to the scrapbook leaves and often in layers two and three deep to the page; in addition to the photographs and memorabilia, there are unusual and colorful bon voyage cards and well-wishes and dozens of telegrams from friends and associates to the doctor on his tour; the photographs range from snapshot to large 7" x 9 1/2" size photos, real photo postcards and other formats; A sample photo: A group in Cannes France, identified as "...August 26, 1931 at the Hotel Martinez: James J. Walker, William Schroeder Jr., Henri Prince, Charles Wilson Prop. of the Martinez, William Degrau, David Mairen Roger Davis and a number of the guests of the hotel" or a press photo "Raimbouillet France Mayor James J. Walker of New York Pays a Visit to President Doumer of France..." and " Tomb of Unknown Soldier Budapest Hungary August 23, 1931 with official representatives of the city of Budapest and the Mayor" many photos of the shipboard life and more of the tour; an example of an ephemeral item, a typed list: "Dinner to be given by Sir William Jowitt, Attorney General of England, at the House of Commons, on Monday, 14th September, to meet Mayor Walker. Those invited to dine with Mayor Walker are the following - Lord Reading, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Rt. Hon. Stanley Baldwin, Rt. Hon. Winston Churchill, Rt. Hon. J. H. Thomas, Secretary of State for the Dominions and Colonies, Rt. Hon. Arthur Greenwood, Minister of Health in the late Labour Government, Rt. Hon. Sir John Simon..."; An interesting sidebar to the tour was medical research work of Dr. Schroeder, who had been asked to visit various medical institutions and scientific research facilities in Germany and elsewhere to investigate techniques, especially as related to community hygiene. Letters and telegrams of invitation, signed by German scientists and including itineraries are here present, evidently the doctor's work of some importance; A unique and massive collection and a wonderful evocation and record of the time.

Collection of fine art portrait photographs of Natalie Hays Hammond (1904-1985) heiress daughter of mining engineer and speculator-developer of mining properties John Hays Hammond who became a painter, Broadway set and costume designer, author, and patron of the arts; includes: portrait by Soichi Sunami (1885-1971) with his blindstamp at bottom right and with his studio stamp on back, 7" x 9 1/2" approx., printed on glossy stock to the edge of the paper, light edgewear, very striking and with a somewhat 'noir' feel to the image, shadows and softening of the clothing, upturned collar, very good-we speculate that Hammond's friendship and work with the famous dancer Martha Graham may have been the 'meeting point' for Sunami and Hammond - the photographer known for his Graham portraiture; Peter A. Juley & Son, the leading fine arts photography firm in New York from 1906 to 1975 and perhaps most famously known for their portraits of artists at work - as this portrait, matte finish in sepia tones 7 1/4" x 9" approx., with studio imprint on back and with the signature in pen lower right 'Juley N Y', of Hammond at studio drawing board, concentrating with pen in hand. A bit of fade towards edges, line of old mount residue on back of cardstock, nevertheless atmospheric, good plus; (3) images taken at Ira L. Hill's Studio, N.Y.C. Ira L. Hill (1877-1947) eccentric and prolific society, fashion and Broadway acting portrait photographer - each with the studio stamp and one with the handwritten 'Natalie Hays Hammond' identified, all on glossy stock, printed to the edge. All different poses, 2 differing clothing outfits, (a) 9" x 11 3/4", light wear, few scratches & tiny abrasions, one corner chipped away, good, (b) 9 3/8" x 11 3/4", light wear, few tiny edge abrasions, very good and (c) 9 1/2" x 12 1/2", top two corners with old crease lines, some other tiny flecking in the body of the image, good; A medium size child portrait of a very young Natalie being held fondly by her father John Hays Hammond (1855-1936) "...the best-known mining engineer in the world..." after his stupendously successful exploits working with Cecil Rhodes in the development of mines in South Africa (DAB) and the source of his daughter's later fortune, in sepia tones gum print, pencil signed Ames below right, image 4 3/4" x 7" approx., hinged at side to heavy paper stock mount, approx. 8 3/4" x 12 1/2" image fine, mount with a bit of edge, tips wear, old mounting hinge residue on back of mount paper, very good; light wear; A photographic portrait of "Miss Natalie Hammond dau. of Mr. & Mrs. John Hays Hammond of Washington marble portrait in Royal Academy exhibition 1926 by Cecil Thomas Permission given to reproduce (signed) Cecil Thomas" by the sculptor, evidently commissioned by the family for the work. 6" x 8" approx., glossy stock, some minor edge, tips wear and soiling on back, very good; and (2) portraits that are unidentified as to studio: 9" x 13" approx. size for both, done in gold tones reminiscent of the best of Arnold Genthe portrait work, subtle lighting effects, soft tones and yet very dramatically posed and taken - some edge, tips wear and corner-creasing, one with two closed edge-tears - with all faults still superb images and perhaps the best-taken of the lot; all in all, a very good group of some of the best of the photo portraiture work taken by well-known society and art photographers of the time; especially interesting to have the ability to compare the same subject taken through the eyes of several master studios' work; N.H. Hammond's former home in North Salem, New York is now part of the Hammond Museum and Japanese Stroll Garden in that community.

Merner, who commissioned the volume, dedicating it to Flodden W. Heron "...in appreciation of a Stevenson Night given by Mr. Heron before the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco..."; (from the colophon page): "...privately printed for Garfield D. Merner...by Cecil and James Johnson at The Windsor Press, San Francisco, set in Goudy Antique type...The photograph of the Stevenson Memorial was specially taken for this book by Ansel E. 5 three-ring binders worth of materials from this Long Island industrial engineering firm; they had been located at several places on the Island, including Plainview, Bohemia, Riverhead and Syosset; evidently the company had much work with heating sensory equipment, including hand-drawn requests from subcontractors to supply various pieces of inventive technology to the Cowan firm for their clients; one binder on fiber optic sensing devices and uses with heating equipment and furnaces is including an interesting 1960 piece from the American Optical Company concerning Fiber Optics, their specifications and uses, relatively early for the practical application of this technology which had been invented much earlier, with references and diagrams, folding plans and blueprints and including the later Cowan application of the F.O. technology to their "Flame Scanner" equipment; another binder with about 25 8" x 10" professionally-done black and white photographs of Cowan equipment, mostly sensind devices and industrial heating monitoring equipment technology; (with) a binder with some hundreds of sheets of blueprints and materials regarding installation and arrangement of these devices, dating from the 1960s, gas & oil combination firing, burner interlocks, flame interlocks, automatic burner sequence air atomizer power arcs Riley type OD-2 Boilers standard folding plans, more: with a most interesting 5-page "Partial List of Installations in the United States" in about 37 states listed, with the clients and locations, and "Foreign Installations" in Mexico, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Italy more; (with) a binder pubicizing a bit later equipment from the company, when located in Riverhead, LI., automatic boiler controls, flame detectors, concentric oil ingintor, power arc probe, other ignitors, more, with printed material and plans and about 50 color pictures of the equipment in operation, flame on, with a BW photograph of the USS Transcolorado and another photograph of an unknown installation site(?); (with) a binder containing some older catalog materials on Combustion Engineering Inc., with index, some hundreds of pages, black and white illustrated and probably of 1950s vintage, concerning pilot oil torches, gas torches, WR-T oil guns, QC panel oil guns, nozzle parts, burners, fuels, oil burning equipment, material on the combustion of pulverized coal, "T" & "R" burner illustratinos, more; 3 binders are old cloth type, with some wear and soiling, endpapers blackening, other two are in red vinyl; materials contained in generally very good and clean condition, and give an interesting background to the technology and business of this Long Island engineering firm in the middle of the twentieth century.

This large asylum and home for the children, mostly for orphans and aged New York State Masonic families, was built in the early 1890s in Utica, New York by the state Grand Lodge; Collection of mostly 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" size views, a few 6" x 9", a couple smaller, 4" x 6 1/2"; all mounted on heavy stock, all identified in the image and apparently professionally taken, perhaps as publicity for the institution; including: Supt. Wiley & Children; Children at Play; Main Doorway and Corridor; Road from Rutger St. Showing Lake; Hall in Administration Building; Children's Study and Telegraphy Room; Hospital Surgery; Nursery; Children's Kindergarten Play Room; Girl's Dormitory; Hospital Reclining Room Showing Sun Parlor; Old Lady's Parlor; Boys Dormitory; Girls Dormitory; Childrens Study Library & Reading Room; Children's Cooking Room; Superintendent's Office; Base Ball Diamond and Playground; Home Dining Room; Swimming Tank in Gymnasium; Childrens Study Room; Reception Room & Library; Staircase in Administration Building; Childrens Reading Room; Billiard, Pool, Card & Reading Room; Old Ladies Parlor; no date but circa 1900; a few of the images have 'cutouts' as if for a particular display purpose, with no loss of context for the images themselves; some old corner-mounting evidence, perhaps pinned to a board at one time; some light wear to the mounts; images in very good condition, sharp and clear and the collection giving the effect of telling the story of this institution, most probably at the turn of the 20th century; good institutional architectural history as well as a glimpse into the educational ideas of the time.

3 images by this noted photographer, whose work has been recently featured in a forthcoming Harvard University Peabody Museum press book including her work," Human Documents - Eight Photographers" Compiled by Robert Gardner; 3 circus-themed images in black and white; approx. 11" x 14" size; one of which is mounted on board and with the studio stamp of the photographer on the back, along with some penciled notations; the other two photographs with no back information or stamps, and evidently of the same series - the mounted image of the same tight-rope walker as in one of the unmounted photographs; no date and circa 1960s; some wear to edges, corner wrinkling; nevertheless, in very good condition, dramatic and energy-filled imagery by this noted anthropological photographer.

Two albums of 19th century of world travel photograph reproductions tipped into specific albums from this Massachusetts Sarsaparilla manufacturer, containing a total of 200 different images + an additional photograph (in Volume II) of the "Hood's Sarsaparilla Laboratory, Lowell, Mass." showing the busy factory with train deliveries and a vast enterprise at work; the collector could order sets of 10 photographic reproductions of "...Famous Scenes, American and Foreign..." and then would paste them into these albums; each image has the printed number and title; Volume I images follow consecutively along with their numbered sequence, 1-100; Volume II with images 101-200 were not tipped-in sequentially, the images are mounted in no particular order and are nevertheless complete according to the list at front of the album; At back of both albums are a "Descriptive Index" which gives detailed information, a paragrraph or so, of each image, location & historical interest; no copyright date but circa 1896 from internal evidence; previous ownership signature on front endpaper of one album; Our research indicates this is the complete run of images produced by Hood's in this promotional endeavor; an interesting group of imagery from the late nineteenth century and a clever marketing strategy by which Hood's 'connected' with their clients via the collecting impulse, which surely kept the company in front of the viewer through mailings of additional photographs, advertisements, and by the physical article of the albums being there to look at over and over again, giving repetition and recognition of their brand name; it is also noteworthy as to what the company considered interesting to their clients to include in the album; this in itself indicates what the "viewing public" may have been interested in at the time: exploration, romantic travel and the "World Tour" of the middle classes; Mexico has its own set, as does The West Indies including the Bahamas and Cuba; The United States is represented by about 40 images, including some from Alaska, with Indians, Totem Poles, the gold fields and many of the historic sites across America; The European countries: Great Britain, France, Germany-Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain, Portugal, Holland and more exotic, yet accessible (by the end of the 19th century) Middle Eastern destinations: Turkey, Greece, Egypt and also including a set of 10 images of India; generally speaking, these are well-taken tour album depictions and some are of places which no longer exist or which have changed beyond recognition; albums are oblong format approx. 6 1/2" x 8 1/2"; one bound in green cloth, the other in grey; gilt cover titles; some wear to bindings, occasional rubbing to images, closed tears to paper mount backings; inner hinge paper separating, albums too heavy for the bindings; overall, good condition.

Custom-made portfolio, containing eight cardstock leaves; title page with hand water-color painting of ducks in marsh, surrounding typed information regarding this project, "Field & Stream Lakes DU Factory No. 170"; throughout, there is a declaration that "Field & Stream" (magazine publishers) will provide the funds for the project which "...will produce waterfowl by the thousands; earn the thanks and acclaim of North America's million duck-hunters; and raise an enduring monument to the cooperation which guarantees better duck flights to all sportsmen-everywhere..."; 2nd page with hand-color outline map of North America, depicting the area for the project which was in a large breeding ground in Canada; photographs of a man & vehicle on the next page depict "...the range which "Field & Stream Lakes" will transform into a duck-producing project..."; p. 4 with 4 photographs of ducks in flight, and on the water, with details on construction of "...head-gates to divert water from main canals; secondary canals (with chutes, culverts, etc.) to direct flow to our permanent lakes; dams, dykes and other works to control lake levels..." and mentioning DU progress on restoring 'phantom water' habitats; p. 5 with another watercolor outline illustration, with a beautiful pair of ducks in flight, describing how the funds provided will survey, design and manage, construct and negotiate with the Canadian government and neighbors regarding the project, the last of the numbered 'points' "... 9. Put on the wing multiplied masses of ducks each season."; p. 6 with four photographs gives some history on the efforts of DU and showing some earthmoving equipment with Ducks Unlimited signage and also dams, and other construction on DU sites (this page with some pencil notations-as for a possible printing of this Prospectus); P. 7 with 5 snapshots with a list of the agencies and groups that have been cooperated with in the past by DU, including the Fish & Wildlife Service, Wildlife Institute, Canadian government agencies, Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Admin., "DU Kee-men," Canadian and American sportsmen; we speculate that this project never came to fruition, at least in this form. Ducks Unlimited began in 1937 and while this is not dated, internal evidence mentioning progress from 1938 and also from an included dated photographic map of the proposed area (1945), 8" x 10" gives a circa mid-1940s possible dating for the item; World War II needs may have prevented the finalizing of the project, Field & Stream may have not 'gone' for the funding or many other possible scenarios; all the plate pages contained in a 10 ½" x 13" approx. size dark green cloth portfolio with a Ducks Unlimited illustration paste-down label and "Field & Stream Lakes' title; some edge, tips wear and rubbing to the portfolio; some dustiness and soiling to plates; all photos present; contents in very good condition and an interesting mid-twentieth century conservation and duck-hunting ephemeral history item; while there is no artist noted on the plates, the artistic effort is of professional quality

Photograph portrays a three-masted sailing ship, under full canvas; framed and glazed; very tiny additional ship visible in distance; approximately a dozen crew members visible on deck; no ship name visible, no date but circa 1890 or so and flying Belgian colors aft; 16 3/4" x 28" visible image; approximately 25" x 36 1/2" framed size; old brown wood frame, probably contemporary with the piece; paper backer; old matting; a fairly clear and well-composed nautical image; probably the largest hand-colored photograph we have seen; some wear and scraping to the frame, still very solid; a little discoloration to the right side of the matting board, unobtrusive; unexamined out of the frame; in very good condition, an interesting nautical photographic image in a very large format.

Over 75 good black and white images photographed after the disastrous 1938 Hurricane which hit Long Island and New England; images approx. 3 1/2" x 5 1/4" or 2 3/4" x 4 1/2" format; images including people investigating houses with entire sections suspended in mid-air with no foundations or support; street scenes with trees smashed flat to the roads and sidewalks; tide water in front of the old Bonwit Teller at Job's lane and other long views of the streets in Southampton town; greenhouse structures flattened, panes of glass nearly all gone; costly seaside dwellings ruined, collapsed along with submerged automobiles; church destroyed and gutted by the raging seas and tide; scenes of interior carnage and destruction in homes, nearly nothing recognizable as human habitation, mere stacks of scrap; workers uniformed in white sanitation outfits attempting salvage of debris; deeply eroded cuts through the landscape, streaming with garbage and storm wrack, river-like flows through a formerly placid scene; homes and fancy clubs crushed flat to the point of only the roof being left, pitiful human beings wading through the new streams and observing the wreckage, trudging to higher ground; old dockage areas absolutely devastated, debris caught behind old pilings as so much scrap wood; several pictures of homes literally flattened to a flat, pancaked pile of junk; homes with half the exterior walls gone, exposing the inside as if in a horror-story doll's house; automobile nearly buried by a falling tree; another street scene where there is so much rubbish and leaves, dirt and branches, wood and accumulation of waste that it is impossible to see the road; people digging, observing, trying to salvage material everywhere; aerial views taken from a biplane (struts and wings visible) show the immense destructive change to the physical landscape on a huge scale, water, sand, eroded soil visible for miles; contained in an old photo album, with side string gone and wear, pages loose; photos with light wear, often, easily popping off the backing with no residue; images generally in very good condition; an interesting 1938 Long Island Hurricane weather, meteorology history and photographic imagery of storm damage; many hundreds died in this hurricane, thousands of homes and automobiles were destroyed and the damage toll ran into the billions of dollars.
