In two volumes; lxii + 173 pages + 243 pages; illustrated with tissue-guarded portrait frontispieces of Browning and with facsimiles of her writings in the text; one of a limited edition of 453 copies printed at the De Vinne Press for the Bibliophile Society; Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) English poet, read Homer in Greek and wrote verses a the age of eight, in 1833 her 'Prometheus Bound' was published and constantly wrote prose and verse after this, met and married Robert Browning, with whom she lived for most of the rest of her life in Italy-she also took a keen interest in the Italian struggle for freedom. (DNB); previous owner pencil name on the endpaper of Vol. II of Mary Ella Hopkins August 27, 1940; bound in the original light brown full butter calf leather boards, conservatively gilt ruled, gilt titled, gilt Bibliophile Society emblem on spines, top edges gilt; contained in the original yellow polished paper covered slipcases with brown cloth spines, which are in turn contained in brown cloth slipcases having paper title labels on the spines; outer cases browned and worn; slight wear to bindings, contents very clean and in very good condition.

(85) pages; the poem and with notes following by Felicia Dorothea Hemans [née Browne] (1793-1835) British poet "...In the 1970s and especially the 1980s feminist critics began to find value in her studies of women's situations and women's creativity. In the 1990s historicist critics took up questions of style, poetics, and politics, arguing that these reveal Hemans as a critic of conventions such as patriotism and female self-sacrifice. Hemans is now recognized by many literary historians as the most notable British poet flourishing between the death of Byron and the rise of Tennyson and the Brownings." (Nanora Sweet in the DNB); handwritten throughout in a light sepia ink, in a good later 19th-century hand, with few errors and corrections and rather elegantly presented in a straight-grain full green morocco leather binding, gilt cover titles and roll-tool decorated bordering, spine with gilt rules, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt; evidently produced with some painstaking effort and with a bookplate of E.F. Keene laid-in, presenting the book via a handwritten note on the plate to F.E. Keene in 1931, "...on her eighteenth birthday..." from her father; binding with some wear and rubbing, little chipping along spine edge, still firm and sound, a handsome look; very good condition.

A twelve-line acrostic in the form of 2 stanzas of a poem, handwritten and with a bit of explanatory text below; the first letter of each line of the poetry matching the first letters of Sophia Taylor's name; the explanation below relates "...An Acrostic written one evening while waiting for Supper, for Mr. Albert Bee to send to Miss Sophia Taylor, of Massachusetts 1845..."; and below having some amusing additional text which alludes to the couple's romantic inclinations; a total of another dozen lines of writing after the acrostic; done in a fairly strong & clear contemporary hand in dark sepia ink, with a few small 'write-over' corrections to a few letters; on a 8" x 12 1/2" sheet of plain paper; on back in the same hand is noted "An Acrostic Nov 26th"; some splitting along old fold lines; little dustiness & wear; in good condition and a pleasant bit of early-American romantic poetry in acrostic form.
