The collection includes over 150 dated and signed letters written to (and a few items from) Dr. Lucinda DeLeftwich Templin (1888-1969) author, historian & collector, "...one of El Paso's best-loved and most distinguished educators - in 1916 she took her undergraduate and Master's at U. of Missouri and became Dean of Lindenwood College in St. Charles, MO., did doctoral work at Harvard and Columbia and took over as principal at the Radford School in 1927 (at the time, called El Paso School for Girls); Dr. Templin interested Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Radford of Webster Grove, Mo., in the school and the Radfords paid off the mortgage, provided an endowment fund that insured the institution's stability and the name of the school was changed in honor of these benefactors. During Dr. Templin's administration, Radford School grew to a nationally accredited school for girls in the Southwest and when she retired in 1967, the 22-acre campus had more than $1,000,000 in physical improvements and was debt-free. Dr. Templin had also completed plans for construction of a $400,000 library and museum on property owned by the school; she was a member of the nation's leading educational organizations and honorary societies, named consistently to Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Education; author of numerous publications, most of which were concerned with the field of education. (The above material from her obituary); This wide-ranging, diverse collection has three intertwining themes - letters concerning Dr. Templin's ongoing interest in education and educational materials for her school, letters which relate to the business and academic part of Radford and letters of reference for applicants and correspondence which relates to the creation of her War Museum, where she collected military autographs, uniforms, photographs, paraphernalia, weapons from around the world. A sampling of what is found here, chronological order: 1921 Dr. James G. Kiernan, writing about some autographs he was sending to Templin - he was famous for the earliest-known use of the word heterosexual in the United States; 1921 Ellen Shaw Barlow writing in relation to the national Committee on Prisons and Prison Labor, requesting Templin's presence for a meeting of the Committee on the Care and Training of Delinquent Women and Girls; 1926 Roy Franklin Nichols (1896-1973) American historian and a Pulitzer Prize winner, writing regarding one of Templins' publications; 1928 Breckinridge Long (1881 - 1958) diplomat and politician served in the administrations of Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, on Democratic National Committee letterhead - regarding a portrait of Rev. John Breckinridge (his great-grandfather) Templin was sending in appreciation of his "…defense of Religious Freedom…"; Federico de Onis Sánchez (1885 - 1966 ) Spanish writer and literary critic, taught Spanish literature at Columbia University in New York concerning a recommendation of one of his students for a position at Radford ; educator John L. Ross, Major Gen. U.S. Army regarding the Templin War Museum project; a clipped signature of Alvan Tufts Fuller (1878 -1958) and one of John Kieran; and a unidentified sepia-tone matte-finish photograph circa 1920s that may be Dr. Templin or perhaps a friend; a few of the items with the original mailing envelopes; many letters with old adhesive residue from being mounted at some time, some with old tape marks in the corners, some of the items trimmed as if to accommodate in a smaller frame or album (not here); old fold lines, ageing; some with corner-attrition due to being removed; in overall good to very good condition and an interesting group of material encompassing the rich educational, business and personal life of this well-known Texas woman educator, whose contacts spanned the United States and the world.

Collection of material includes: 1901 Appointment on parchment, completed in a calligraphic hand, constituting Colonel Kline of the 14th Regiment Inf. to Brigadier General of the NY National Guard; approx. 12" x 16", signed & witnessed by Benjamin B. Odell, Jr., (1854-1926) Governor of the state, with the gold-embossed NY State Seal - some darkening, ageing to the parchment, in very good condition; with 6, 8 1/2" x 11" press photographs of Kline as Mayor, with his wife in his Hillcrest Queens NY home and in Jamaica Queens at a summer place, also an image after his mayoral stint in a review of the Old Guard military - one of these photos with the G. Legendre Photo, N.Y. World accreditation, 2 of the images from American Press Assoc. and one of the smaller photos Brown Bros. N.Y.; with a couple of smaller images of the Hillcrest home & of the Mayor & wife and sepia-tone photo of Kline in his old Guard uniform, completely with tall bearskin shako military hat - some edge, tips wear and occasional chipping to corners of images, in generally very good condition; The newspaper clipping scrapbook of 150 pages; very usefully at the front of the scrapbook is an alphabetical index of all the articles found within, all printed within the time of office of A. L. Kline as Mayor of the City of New York; Kline (1858-1930) had become acting Mayor of New York City on September 10, 1913 (and remains the only Mayor of NY who'd never held an elected position) upon the death of Mayor William Jay Gaynor (1849-1913), serving for the rest of that year; this scrapbook announces and gives Kline's & the NY public's reaction to the death of Gaynor, who had died while at sea traveling to Europe - doctors suspected from overwork and old injuries sustained from an attempted assassination a few years prior; in the index, most of the articles are given their newspaper attribution - N.Y. Tribune, Globe, Eagle, Sun, World, Mail, Post, Times - the date of printing, a short title of the article and the page number at which to be found in the scrapbook; at the articles' page, each is again dated, newspaper identified; with editorial opinions, news, police and crime pieces, various financial and board proclamations and debates, city works and charities, education and more covered here, headline examples include: Tammany Snow Contract Blocked; Temperance Women Welcomed; Teachers Pension Fund is found lacking; Mayor Elects Testimony; Mr. Stover Found in New Orleans (city official had disappeared from Parks Dept. post for a month); Kline Demands Budget Economy; Mayor Kline's Good School Appointments; Buildings and Safety of Them and hundreds more pieces - much on Mayor Gaynor, his life, death and city legacy and many other topics covered; in addition to the tipped-in scrapbook articles are laid-in sections of newspapers of the time, reporting the death of Mayor Gaynor and announcing the appointment of Kline as Acting Mayor; with another photograph tipped-on to a loose scrapbook page of A.L. Kline & John Purroy Mitchel (1879-1918) who succeeded Kline as mayor of New York (and was the second-youngest to have ever held the position at 34 years old); some of the scrapbook items with black and white illustrations; the book approx. 11" x 16 1/2" size; a ledger style, "Mark Twain's Scrap Book" by Daniel Slote & Co., N.Y., which touted a patented 'self-stick' mounting system for placing items within; ledger with this brand's sticker on front endpaper; textured green cloth covered boards, leather corners; spine covering gone, boards detached; some of the scrapbook leaves chipped and detached, the paper brittle and darkening; in generally good condition and giving an excellent nearly day-by-day accounting of Kline's short interim term as Mayor; there is no identity given of the scrapbook's maker, however due to its thoroughness, we speculate it may very well have been kept by a close family member or a mayor's office worker at the time; it would be very difficult to recreate the information found here in this same orderly and accessible fashion; a very good reference to New York City history of the time, via primary sources.

A bound group of poetry on African-American themes, most probably corresponding to the edition credited to Howard Weeden published by Doubleday & McClure in 1899; containing 54 poems, typed, one side only; with blank pages interspersed between the poems; with some interesting ephemeral items laid-in, including: A typed note-sheet, stating "I shall read a group of Negro Poems from the pen of Miss Howard Weedon (Please Note: throughout the owner's commentary, the spelling of the name is 'Weedon' as opposed to 'Weeden' -also, the original spelling of the note is left as found) of Huntsville, Ala. Miss Weedon, lived on a great plantation and spent much of her time among the Darkies. She made a thorough study of their psychology and their phylosophy. In the writing of each poem, she had a specific Darky in mind, in fact when her book was published, each poem carried an original photograph of the Darkey by whom the poem was inspired. From Miss Weedon we catch the Negro in his every mood, his simple yet colorful nature is beautifully delinated by her. The collection from which I read is entitled "Bandana Ballads", and this copy from which I read I transcribed from one of only 100 copies published. Shortly after the publication Miss Weedon died, her brother because of sentemental reasons refused several of America's greatest publishing house, and a very substantial remuneration for the privilege to reprint. I, of course, am very happy to claim this copy." (with) another typed sheet, one side with "Program of Negro Literature Mrs. Nelly Lane Reader" in three Parts, listing 6 numbered selections with sub-selections giving 10 total, of pieces by Louise Ayers Garnett, Keith Preston, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Beatrice Ravenel, Ruth McEnery Stuart, Joel Chandler Harris, James Weldon Johnson - on the back of this page are penciled notations: (at top) "Sidney Homer (Louise Homer & Daughter) and the rest reflecting the same information in the previous, typed version; (with) laid-in at the page for the poem "Left Behind" a slip of paper with pencil notations regarding performance of the reading of the poem; on the front endpaper is penciled, "Miss Howard Weedon Huntsville, Alabama"; bound in polished black leather, with a red bandanna pasted-down across the front of the top board, title (somewhat crudely) stamped in gilt; top board detached as is front free endpaper (still present), spine ends covering chipped away at top and bottom 1 1/2"; boards rubbed, edgeworn; contents generally very clean; in good condition, an interesting compilation of African-American lore and poetry more well-known in it's published form; especially interesting for the laid-in materials; there is no indication why the noted opera singer Louise Homer and her composer husband Sidney Homer are briefly mentioned here.
