Original watercolor approx. 4 1/4" width x 6" height of this Warren Brandt still life subject; inscribed at the bottom left in pencil "For Gloria Merry Christmas 1988 (and beneath that) Warren Brandt Paris 1988"; inscription is to Gloria Jones, wife of the American author James (From Here to Eternity) Jones; colors bright and vivid; had been tape-mounted in the past, now re-tipped on at top edge archivally; in it's original mount, a hand-painted matte board cover, probably also done by Brandt, since the back of the board is additionally inscribed "For Gloria Christmas 1988" in the artist's hand; the matte is worn, naive-looking- the artwork itself is in very good condition a nice, intimate small piece. Wyeth, collated complete according to the list; pictorial endpapers; title and copyright page dates of 1911, match, publisher's seal on copyright page; with the contents page (x) listing chapter XVI on page 23 in error (should be page 123); top edge not gilt and no tissue guards on the plates, indicating a later state of the printing; color paste-down on cover; previous owner name on half-title page; edge, tips, spine ends wear-through, rubbing, fraying at spine ends, top of which chipped a bit; contents with the occasional closed edge-tear, soiling; overall, presentably good condition, plates very good. 44 pages for the 'Murder of the Geogles...Fiend Snyder' story, with 3 black and white woodcut illustrations and followed by the 'Extracts' of Henry Madison, another murderer who later committed suicide, which is oddly paginated and may indeed be simply extracted from a larger grouping, giving the reader a prurient glimpse of what is to be had when purchasing the whole tale - this section approx. 20 pages in length and also with 3 lurid cuts - and an additional small cut of "The Fiend Snyder, photographed as he lay in his coffin after the lynching"; the "Madison" piece followed by (4) pages of publisher's announcements and then by one more stabbing and killing murder plate; original illustrated paper wrap covers in pale green; back cover repeats the 'coffin shot' of Snyder, front of paper wraps depicts the hanging of the 'fiend'; some edge, tips wear and chipping to edges and spine of covers, back wrap corner torn away with no loss to the illustration; small hole to front cover; contents with one closed tear, no loss; good condition overall and interesting tabloid criminal history from the later part of the 19th century.
