Well-taken photograph of ships in the harbor in Genoa; a full broadside look at the Stromboli; albumen process; of German photographer Alfred Noack (Dresden 1833 - Genoa 1895); our research indicates that Stromboli was a protected cruiser, laid-down in 1886 and sold in 1907 and was of the Etna class; crew visible on deck, small boats in harbor approach; about 8" x 10" size; laid down onto new matte board; no date but circa 1890; photograph & studio identifiers at bottom of image, with number 6979; couple of old creases, do not detract from fairly sharp and detailed image; very good condition and interesting Italian nautical & photographic history.

Letter hand written on blue Convent, Morris County New Jersey letterhead; dated January 20th 1896; to Mr. Frank Graham Moorhead "Dear Sir I have been away from home and not all well which must be my excuse for leaving your letter so long unanswered. In Harper's Magazine for October 1892 you will find an article about me which contains all the facts you would be likely to want for your purposes. Your truly A.B. Frost"; Arthur Burdett Frost (1851-1928) American graphic artist, comics writer and fine arts painter; we note that the writings of Frank Graham Moorehead are held at the U. of Iowa; about 6" x 9" size; handwriting bold, black ink very legible and clear; some light wear and darkening to the paper; old fold lines; old mounting residue on (blank) back; very good condition and with a nice bit of biographical content on the great illustrator.

Typed letter on the newspaper PM Daily letterhead paper; dated 13 February 1947; a couple of paragraphs, in which he apologizes for a delay in answering the recipients letter and remarks "...I am interested in bibliotherapy, saw some encouraging signs of its usefulness at Rockland State Hospital and at the Menninger Clinic, and hope to write about it some day...I would be pleased to get any material that you may have available on the subject..."; with the original canceled mailing envelope, also a PM Daily printed piece; Albert Deutsch (1905-1961) medical historian and journalist, his first book, Mentally Ill in America, "...immediately established Deutsch's reputation as the most important historian of American psychiatry up to that time..." and Deutsch went on to pioneer exposure of the treatment of veterans in hospitals as well as juveniles; he was elected an early member for what became the New York Society for the History of Medicine and was awarded much recognition and winning citations for his ground-breaking journalism. (Edward M. Brown in the ANB); light wear, one corner fold-lined, envelope with some soiling;l in very good condition and an interesting history of science autograph, especially as referring to Deutsch's opinion and interest in bibliotherapy.

Several pieces of material, including: September 17, 1957 typed letter signed from Alberto Vargas to recipient on Long island which includes (1) set of 3 pages of stapled typed copy "Idea and Design by Alberto Vargas..." delineating a short movie about his work called "Heavenly Body" and which is a melding of his pin-up girl artistry with a proposed automobile design - describing in minute, item-numbered detail a staged 'routine' and storyline, with singing and dramatic action and which does not appear have been produced; in the letter from Vargas, he is asking the recipient to sign one copy of the 'design' and send back to him, which was done; with the original mailing envelope having Vargas' 1539 Greenfield Avenue California address and postally canceled in October at Visalia CA, airmailed to New York; laid-in is a lengthy illustrated newspaper clipping from the Visalia Times-Delta of Sept. 19, 1957 by reporter Ron Einstoss with the headline, "Famed Artist Alberto Vargas Visits Visalia" and which illustrates himself with his work and also with his wife - humorously, a note has been written-in at top which states in part "...Alberto is quite a guy! Anna Mae (his wife) wears the pants!..." - the article mentions the reason that Vargas is in Visalia, being a house guest of Robert Lash Robbins, also a commercial artist and known for his WWII poster stamps and who cooperated with Vargas on a book of Pony Express artistry in stamps as well being a musical lyricist; (with) a two-page typed letter signed from Robbins written in 1964 on his business letterhead (Fine & Commercial Artist Employing Oils, Temperas, Air Brush, Silk Screen, Line Techniques) from Visalia California, to the same recipient on Long Island, asking a similar 'copyrighting' favor for his friend, writer George N. Walker who had met with some misfortune in this area, "...theft of his finished materials by Radio and TV factions..." (no additional materials here); Robbins notes that "...A check in the amount of $ 1.00 is being enclosed to help defray the expenses of postage, etc., with 20 cents left over for bus fare to the Post Office..."; Robbins also writes of some of his musical endeavors and receiving royalties for same; the recipient had evidently accomplished this task for Robbins, as there are Post Office mailing receipts for the material; according to the Vargas and Robbins correspondence, this method of 'copyright' securing was used by both artists to secure their work; Alberto Vargas (1896-1982) famed 'pin-up' painter and illustrator; both letters and Vargas' 'show' script in very good condition, old fold lines; Vargas envelope with some wear and tear and soiling; newspaper clipping darkened; all materials very good and an interesting glimpse into Vargas' artistic process as well as his attempts to legally secure his work, along with his friend Robbins' attempts to do the same.
