(exterior); York (interior); Durham Cathedral 1859 J.V. exterior view from across the water; Durham Cathedral interior; Chester Cathedral, taken from within the cemetery grounds; Windsor Castle from the Home Park 3382 J.V.; Burns' Cottage Ayr; Stirling Castle from the Beach Walk 1637 G.W.W.; Auld...Ayr (Bridge) G.W.W.; and one other larger-format exterior Cathedral view (7" x 9 1/2"); George Washington Wilson (G.W.W.) (1823-1893) was born in Scotland, and was one of the early royal photographers. In 1849 he set up business as a portrait miniaturist; a brave feat at a time when photography was becoming an ever-increasing challenge offering cheaper pictures and becoming fashionable. After a while he began a short partnership with John Hay, setting up a portrait studio. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were keen on photography, and commissioned the partners to document the building of Balmoral, their new highland home, from 1853 onwards. Thus began a long association with the Royal Family, and in 1868 Wilson illustrated one of the Queen's "Leaves from the Journal or our Life in the Highlands." In 1873 he was awarded a royal warrant. His fame spread widely, and in 1864 claimed to have sold over half a million prints. He was the photographer whose photographs were first sold in Cabinet size. In 1876 Wilson built new premises, perhaps the first to mass-produce photographs. This large firm rivalled that of Frith over the border. He also produced a number of Stereoscopic pictures, notable for the fact that the exposures were very short - less than one second. By the 1880s his was one of the largest photographic publishers in the world. He employed over thirty assistants in his Aberdeen firm, and was particularly keen to ensure that his prints were carefully washed and gold-toned, so as to remove all residual chemicals. As a result, Wilson's albumen prints were more stable than others made in the same era." (Robert Leggat, 1999); James Valentine (1815-1879) was a well-known photographer of Dundee, Scotland. Valentines of Dundee produced Scottish topographical views from the 1860s, and later became internationally famous as the producers of picture postcards. Valentine was a founder of the Edinburgh Photographic Society and photographer by appointment to the Queen; (with) a few miscellaneous, later photographs in the album: Interlaken & Jungfrau Edit Photogrlab; a couple of photographs of Rafael's works, Correggio, and the Transfiguration; all photographs mounted on original album cardstock leaves; all contained in the original pebbled-cloth covered boards album, leather corners and spine; wear to covers; spine cover letter gone, binding tight; very good condition.

Good photograph of this sailing ship; approx. 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" size, about postcard size and this is not a postcard, no marks on back or lines or publisher-photographer; no date and our research indicates the "Hutton Hall" was built by W.H. Potter and Sons of Liverpool in 1884 for the Hall Shipping Co. of Liverpool, iron hull 277 feet in lenght with a gross tonnage of 2052; light wear; a nice image in very good condition, and a good late nineteenth century nautical history item.

Photograph portrays a three-masted sailing ship, under full canvas; framed and glazed; very tiny additional ship visible in distance; approximately a dozen crew members visible on deck; no ship name visible, no date but circa 1890 or so and flying Belgian colors aft; 16 3/4" x 28" visible image; approximately 25" x 36 1/2" framed size; old brown wood frame, probably contemporary with the piece; paper backer; old matting; a fairly clear and well-composed nautical image; probably the largest hand-colored photograph we have seen; some wear and scraping to the frame, still very solid; a little discoloration to the right side of the matting board, unobtrusive; unexamined out of the frame; in very good condition, an interesting nautical photographic image in a very large format.

Interesting albumen photograph of a painting by G. G. Fish, published by Soule and with the printed title and copyright data also printed below the image on the mount card; image has been tinted and also has had some additional painting added, to the girls lacy trim and her colorful hair ornament; John P. Soule was a famous stereo-photographer from Washington Street Boston, MA, closely associated with the prolific Kilburn Brothers of photographic stereoview fame; image approx. 3 1/4" x 5 1/4" size; the mount card adds about an inch surrounding and the (later) framing adds about 1 3/4" border; some old discoloration noted on the mount card and a little in the image, not very intrusive to the view; framed in a new wood surround and with glass; light wear; very good condition; interesting American photographic history ephemeral item.

Group of 6 images; original gilt-edged cardstock mounts 4 1/4" x 5 1/4" approx., photos a bit smaller; images include: image of a 'saint' in a flowered bower, being towed down the dirt street, crowd on both sides viewing, also in middle ground is a line of mounted horsemen in white, tall posts line the parade route and just visible is a small oval sign with "Santa Barbara Floral Festival '89"; a scene in front of viewing stand with gaily caparisoned 'armored knight' on horse bedecked with flowers, other skilled horseman galloping by, bass drum player marching in the opposite direction, rapt viewers in the stands, very well-dressed; an image roughly in front of the same area, with cowboy heading a float with passengers, towed by two large oxen, all suitably flowered; another float being pulled by a team of horses that appears to carry a flowered version of the California bear mascot, all done in mossy branches and flower-decked; a small two-wheeled 'float' of chariot shape, being towed by what appears to be a goat and man in white and apparently of great amusement to the crowd, which contains a photographer with box camera in front, the road strewn with flowers; and a view of what appears to be the bell tower of the Mission San Gabriel in Los Angeles; our research indicates that then-President Benjamin Harrison was in attendance at this flower festival in Santa Barbara and may indeed be visible in the stands - more information on his visit and a description of the parade and festive environment may be found in the Speeches of Benjamin Harrison, Twenty-third President of the United States: A Complete Collection of His Public Addresses, "...The reception at Santa Barbara was the most unique that the presidential party experienced on their trip, and also one of the most enjoyable; it was a veritable flower carnival. Leading the procession was a Spanish cavalcade commanded by Carlos de la Guerra. The President's escort was a cavalcade of children marshalled by Mrs. Schermer- horn, with flower-decked saddles and bridles; then followed over 100 flower-trimmed equipages, each displaying a different design and flower and bespeaking the marvellous flora of Santa Barbara in the month of April. The stand from whence the President reviewed the procession and witnessed the Battle of Flowers was a floral triumph..."; no photographer or studio noted, these are apparently the work of a skilled amateur photographer; some light wear to mounts; some dimming and fading of imagery; nevertheless very interesting and a good California photographic history group.
