A Stereoview image of a building on Blackwell's Island of New York City, showing a field in front of one of the 3-story large buildings on the island at the time, long run of double-story shaded portico; few folks visible in the arcade; does not appear to be part of the prison (no bars on windows) or the smallpox hospital - perhaps an asylum of another kind; no date but circa 1870s; good, fairly clear & detailed image; some edge, tips wear & soiling to mount card corners chipped away; seemingly quickly and cheaply printed, with the mount card unevenly trimmed at top; with the Continent Co. identifiers on front edge; printed on the other edge with "Discriptive (sic) Views of the American Continent"; overall good condition and a good 19th century New York City photographic stereoview of an unusual subject, not a tourist area.

Photograph approx. 6 1/4" x 8 1/2", most probably a professionally taken image in sepia tones, notations on back: "T.A. Loveland (Buck's company secretary) Frank Buck in foreground - Chicago World Fair and Monkey Mountain Frank Buck's Jungle Camp"; the 'mountain' a huge construction, with over 50 simians visible on it and humans surrounding the feature, gazing on - souvenir shop, other fair attractions visible in background. Old pin mounting-holes at corners, crinkling to image, still a great view and in good condition; (with) 1937 typed letter signed by Loveland on Frank Buck Enterprises, Inc. letterhead from Amityville, Long Island thanking the sender for a suggestion for the Park (with) a lengthier (3 paragraph) 1938 TLS by Mrs. Fanchion E. Long, also on a (different) F.B.E. Inc., letterhead to the same recipient, regarding an introduction to an unnamed authoress friend who'd wanted a 'jungle prowl' with Loveland - with news of the 'Jungle Camp' travels, thanking the sender for a 'pineapple concoction' recipe - perhaps for sale at the amusement park - also mentioning music on the grounds via the public address system, which may have been an earlier suggestion by the same person. Both letters with their original Frank Buck mailing envelopes with postal cancellations, some wear and aging to mailers, letters in very good condition; Frank Howard Buck (1884-1950) American hunter, movie actor, director, writer and producer, entrepreneurial entertainer, in addition to being the supplier of many of the world's zoos and nature parks with live specimens of animals for their exhibits; Buck had taken his 'Jungle Camp' exhibit from the Chicago World's Fair "...which broke all attendance records." and relocated it to Long Island and again showed his exhibit at the 1939 NY World's Fair; interesting World's Fair, Long Island amusement park and entertainment ephemera.

(also illustrated, underway before the Manhanset house property) and the Long Island Railroad; original illustrated printed paper wrap covers; with an oval tipped-on black and white illustration of the Manhanset House; elaborate lettering in green and gilt; 5 1/4" x 8 1/2" size; old pen calculations on cover in a contemporary hand; soiling & discoloration, still good; contents in very good condition and interesting, detailed information especially via the illustrations of the amenities at this early 20th-century resort on Shelter Island; the main building burned to the ground in 1910.

15 pages; at back is a useful list of subscribers, along with the officers of the organization and on back of the self-wraps, Constitution of the Society; the subscribers listed alphabetically in their respective towns on Long Island; with an interesting provenance from an old Long Island family, the name signature of John Gardiner just visible on the front cover which is also the title-page; the report notes that the society "...gratuitously distributed fifty-one Bibles and forty Testaments, which, added to the number previously given away, make the aggregate to be five hundred and one Bibles, and two hundred and thirty-two Testaments..."; in addition are given numbers of Bibles & Testaments sold - the encouragement of selling the books coming from the recommendation of the American Bible Society; the Treasurer's report is appended also; a number of statistics given on worldwide distribution of Christian literature, from the American and British societies; mention also is made of the Russian Bible Society, Protestant Bible Society of Paris, United Netherlands Bible Society, Swiss, German, Danish, Swedish societies and others; The British society "...offered five hundred pounds sterling for the first thousand copies of every approved translation of the New Testament, into any dialect of India into which no translation had been previously printed..."; mention is also made of "...a promising Society formed in New South Wales, of a Branch Society at Van Diemen's Land..." and more; report given by David S. Bogart, Cor. The Justice of the Peace in the case was Richard Allen, evidently the accused "...Robert Brinkerhoff of said Town labourer on the evening of the 18 of said month and year aforesaid did assault and with force and violence with a felonious design endeavoured to Commit a Rape on the body of said Isabella (Chappel)..."; the accused, under the attached "Examination" document denies the accusation, saying that "...he saw the said Isabella and conversed with her but denieth the charge against him..." both parties have signed with their mark; docketed on the back as to being an examination and information document, no penalty noted; approx. 8" x 12" size, two about-equal size documents that have been set together using the red sealing wax of the time; written in a good strong 'court room' hand, case heard in the Queens County (Long Island) jurisdiction; light wear, old fold lines; in very good condition, interesting Long Island ephemeral criminal justice history item; the usual sense of the time was that this type of crime would not have been reported very readily-here, a woman has asked for justice in what certainly seems to be a case of violence and crime.

Two documents; court session of July, 1804; giving the full names of the panel, with their town of residence and occupation, about 35 names selected; Jurors selected included David Roe of Hempstead, Benjamin Onderdonk, James Hewlet, Latting Carpenter and Timothy Titus Jun. of Oyster Bay, Charles Frost, Rodman Hicks, Samuel Nichols, mostly 'yeomen' and some carpenters, innkeepers and merchants noted as occupations, residing in Jamaica, areas of Hempstead; Grand Jurors list with names only, and give Jonah Hallett as the Foreman, including Daniel Kissam, Laurence Roe, Minne Schenck, William Onderdonck, David Gardiner, about 23 names in all; approx.8 " x 12 1/2" size, the first item on a folded sheet, only 2 panels with the list, others are blank; the other Grand Jury list is on one side; written in a fairly strong 'court room' hand; some light wear, darkening, old fold lines; in very good condition, interesting Long Island ephemeral justice, courts & law history items.

Document; partially printed, in letterpress; Judge Beekman presiding over the case; accomplished in manuscript and stating: "...Samuel Burtis of No. 164 Fly Market street in the Second Ward of the city of New-York, Grocer and George Forbes of No. 164 Fly Market street in the Second Ward...Grocer personally came before me Theophilus Beeckman one of the special Justices for preserving the peace..." and regarding that Burtis should abide peacefully, "...particularly towards Garbriel Duryea and Isaac Bogart..." with a hundred dollar sum on the recognizance, evidently for some dispute not recorded here; 6 1/2" x 8" size; back of document docketing the case, with a note regarding distances 'Milage from Oyster Bay to New York' and signed by the constables who had to do the notifications, Joseph Latting & Sam Apple; interesting in that there is some frugality involved in the local government, where this Recognizance was evidently printed for cases taking place in the city of New York, here it has been hand corrected and adjusted to Queens County (on Long Island) and with the corrections duly noted and signed-off below the printing; signed by the Judge below; some edgewear, browning along folds & spotting; still, very good condition and an interesting Long Island judicial ephemeral item, along with being of some historical note regarding job printing history at the time.

Jones, Daniel Feeks, James Hegeman presiding over the case; stating, among else: "...Coles Craft...Saith that on the 24th day of December 1824 - that Jacob Baldwin and Robert Ludlam were pushing each other about the store of Richard Cock and Samuel (last name illegible) and that Jacob Baldwin struck him the said Coles Craft, a blow on the face, and threatened to flogg him if he took the law of him..." continuing with a disputatiously various group of testimony as to who hit who in this fight; listed are the subpoena and constable expenses and the case's docketing information on the back; 8" x 12 1/2" size approx.; a sadly violent case, however interesting in that there is some mention of local businesses, both for the court of sessions and the locality of the "affray" itself; some edgewear, browning along folds & spotting; still, very good condition and an interesting Long Island judicial ephemeral item, along with being of some historical note specifically for the Oyster Bay area.
