The Life of Thomas Jefferson, Author of the Declaration of Independence, and Third President of the United States.
Linn, William
Ithaca New York: Mack & Andrus, 1834. F 267 pages; tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) philosopher "...Jefferson preserved his serene faith in freedom, enlightenment, and the progress of humanity..." (Merrill D. Peterson in the ANB); interesting provenance with the front endpaper in manuscript, "The property of the Library Company of Southampton..." with some return 'rules' stated and their number for the book in script - we are unaware of any such organization and was probably a short-lived experiment in the this Long Island, New York township in an effort to imitate the much more prestigious Library Company of Philadelphia - this evidently being a private lending library of similar sort and with no markings in the text or binding; bound in the original full polished brown leather, simple gilt rules on spine, red leather spine label with gilt titles; some edge, tips wear and scuffing to the boards, a little splaying, flaking at hinges; some foxing and spotting, dampstaining to text, mostly at beginning leaves, otherwise, solidly bound and in good condition. Good (Item ID: 20661)
