Collection of 37 wooden blocks; each block with a color picture, incised into the wood and with romaji, Japanese symbols on front, and the breakdown of these symbols graphically displayed on the back of the block: hotaru (lightning bug); ringo (apple); saru (monkey); yotto (sailboat); rubi (ring, portrayed in jewelry box); koma (a spinning top); Huzi (Mt. Fuji) and so on; the color side of the block with light clear protective lacquer or glaze; about 4 cm square, approx. 7 mil in thickness; plain, unidentified close-grained wood; no date or maker marks, no box or identifiers; circa 1950s or so; some edgewear and rubbing, one corner chipped; a bit of fading to colors; overall, very good condition and a very charming set of children's alphabet-learning blocks from Japan.
