The American Cyclops, the Hero of New Orleans, and Spoiler of Silver Spoons. Dubbed LL.D. By Pasquino.
(Adelbert Volck)

Baltimore Maryland: Kelly & Piet, 1868. F xxiv + 198 pages; 12 black and white satirical illustrations, engraved by the author; Adelbert John Volck (1828-1912) a dentist and caricaturist, emigrated to America, 1849, graduated the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery and practiced with success in Baltimore; principally remembered for his series of illustrations favorable to the Confederacy; during the Civil War he published several books which supported the CSA - here, he is lampooning the infamous antics of General Benjamin Franklin Butler (1818-1893) Union soldier and politican, whose administration of New Orleans in 1862 won him the violent hatred of the South and the imputation of corruption in office. (DAB) original publisher's beveled-edge purplish-blue cloth binding; gilt design on the front cover; some edge, tips wear to the binding; very good condition; uncommon anti-Union Confederate propaganda illustrative work; most probably published after the war in a reaction to the carpetbaggers and Reconstructionists that Volck despised.
