New York: 1869. To the County Treasurer of New York at the bank, the "Salaries, Executive" account; for paying one J. Duffy one hundred dollars "Salary as Temporary Clk. County Bureau...; cosigned by the Comptroller and the Clerk Bd. Sup.; with a nice woodcut vignette; printed by The New York Printing Co. Centre St.; Abraham Oakey Hall (1826-1898) lawyer, politician, journalist, known as "Elegant Oakey", graduate of NYU, district attorney for New York, joined Tammany Hall and was mayor of New York City 1868-1872, accused of covering up for the infamous Tweed Ring by his wit and debonair manner; he was acquitted of implication with Tweed, conducting his own defense. He later became very involved with the newspaper industry both in the U.S. and in London. (DAB); light wear; very good condition and interesting New York City political history paper ephemera.
