Our research indicates that this millinery design group was created by George Lawrence, reputedly one of the dancers that played Curly in the dream sequence in the Broadway show Oklahoma!; This Collection includes: A notebook with hand-written directions for hats: Simple Sailor, Simple Tam felt, Straw Sailor, Ribbon Tam, Melon Crown, Stitched Brim, Beret, others, with directions on how to make a Cockard, with actual samples tipped-in, a page with 17 tipped-on hat-making materials including Willow, Ribbed straw cloth, fur felt, crinoline, Alex Jersey, Pique, coarse Milan, others, at back is a list of actresses with their head sizes: Gloria Swanson, Carol Channing, others, laid-in are a couple of cards from the New York School of Modern Millinery; (with) a roll of fabric labels with the name George Lawrence Made to Order Millinery (with) 10 pages of original hat design art accomplished on tracing paper, several sheets of which are in color, images, styles identified (with) several publications regarding hats & hat fashion design: Model Parisian Hats of Tres Parisien American Edition Summer 1931, with 18 plates on cardstock, with pochoir-like hand coloring, all delineating and illustrating haute couture hat fashions from the time; Les Chapeaux de la Femme Chic Publications A. Louchel No. 187 & 188 (both published 1931) each of which contain eight hand-colored hat fashion plates in brilliant colors, often illustrating accessories, dresses as well, from the fashion houses of Jane Blanchot, Marcelle Lely, Camille Roger, Fernande Leon, Andree Nordet, Simone Guy, Mignapouf Chez Cecile Welly, others, text in French, other illustrations in black and white (with) a copy of Fete Des Chapeaux, a commemorative publication for a high fashion hat event put together by the New Orleans branch of the Fashion Group "...designed to capture national attention for New Orleans as a city of fashion inspiration..." (1948) with portraits and biographical details on the designers from around the world that came to the exhibition; (with) a copy of Hats the Official magazine of the Millinery Merchandising Executives Association August 1950, illustrated with industry news and style innovation; some edge, tips wear to covers of publications, some dustiness; some chipping and wear to drawings; overall, good condition and an interesting group of millinery and hat fashion design from the early part of the twentieth century, especially for the original work.
