Gutekunst, Phototype on paper, printed in Philadelphia of this Arctic scene from the explorations of the first International Polar Year (IPY), inspired by the Austrian explorer Carl Weyprecht and which took place from 1881 to 1884, the first series of coordinated international expeditions to the Polar Regions ever undertaken; this phototype is from the Point Barrows segment; The "North Star", a 1,434-ton wooden ice ship was used to hual supplies each summer to Alaska and had been built by the Bureau of Indian Affairs for Admiral Byrd's third expedition to Antarctica. Because of the opposite seasons in Antarctica, the Department of the Interior was able to lend the ship to the Antarctic Service without interrupting the Alaskan service; no date but circa 1890s; image approx. 6 " x 8" approx. size with 1 3/4" margins; little bit of darkening; very good condition and an interesting Arctic exploration image.
